Excerpt from Practical Hints for Hunting Novices The following papers, which by the courtesy of the proprietor of the Field are now published in book form, were written chiefly because of the increased difficulties which Masters of Hounds and Field Masters have lately found with regard to the management of their fields. And as much of the want of discipline which is seen from day to day is the outcome of ignorance on the part of the offenders, and is by no means intentional, it appeared likely that a few practical hints as to behaviour would be of assistance to those hunting people who had not been in the way of securing what may be called a hunting education. While the papers were appearing from week to week in the Field, many of the public expressed the wish that they should be published in book form, and this, therefore, has been done. The author now takes the opportunity of informing his readers that he has no wish to be didactic, but that the ideas and suggestions which are conveyed in the following pages have been gathered during a lengthy experience acquired in nearly half of the English hunting countries, and are the result of his own personal observations. Hunting literature had its beginnings as early as the fourteenth century, when nobles hunted stag, bear, fox, and other game on horseback. As foxhunting grew in popularity, literary works that covered the sport flourished, as well. In Six Centuries of Foxhunting: An Annotated Bibliography, M. L. Biscotti has compiled all books produced in Great Britain and the United States that pertain to, or mention, foxhunting with hounds. Arranged alphabetically by author, more than 2000 titles are included. Each entry features details such as place and year of publication, publisher, book size, page count, illustrations, and binding. Nearly every title is also annotated with a description of the book’s contents, and biographical sketches are provided for the most notable authors. Narratives, histories, illustrated works, verse, fiction, and even anti-hunting literature all have their place in this volume. Six Centuries of Foxhunting also features more than thirty images of book covers and foxhunting illustrations. With appendixes that contain author, title, and illustrator time lines, and separate author and title indexes, this comprehensive bibliography is a valuable resource for researchers, book dealers and collectors, and foxhunters.

The idea of hunting big game sounds amazing, but where do you even start? Can you just wander into the woods with a weapon and start shooting stuff? And how does that surprisingly large deer, elk, or bear walking around out there ultimately become a steak on your kitchen table? And before we even get to that, how can you find these animals in the first place? If you didn't grow up in a hunting family and don't have anyone to show you the ropes, it can seem impossible to figure it all out on your own. This book is written with you - the total beginner - in mind. Not that long ago, I was the guy who was captivated by big game hunting but had no idea what I was doing. I still remember all the "dumb questions" I was afraid to ask but needed answers to. This book will give you the foundation you need to go from absolutely zero hunting experience, to chasing critters out in the field (with plenty of awesome hunting stories throughout to get you fired up). Whether you're hoping to hunt whitetail deer in the East or chase elk in the mountains out West, this book will walk you through all the steps involved in getting you geared up to go live your hunting dreams. Rifle, bow, Grandpa's old shotgun...we'll cover it all and make sure you're prepared to take your first big game harvest home to your dinner table.
