Excerpt from Preaching and Public Speaking: A Manual for the Use of Preachers This book was the outgrowth of ten years observation and reflection. The conviction that such a work was needed came to the author while on a mission to the Southern States, where he had frequent occasion to deplore the waste of time, money, energy, and opportunity to save souls, - to say nothing of the mental anguish, - which is involved before the raw missionary, with no other guide than hit and miss experiment, is changed into the fairly capable preacher. The conviction was intensified by his acting as clerk of Sabbath meetings at home for three years, and having to record the substance of the sermons there delivered. If any one would know how strong is the sense of religious duty among Latterday Saints, even in the face of peculiar discouragements, let him note how, in spite of our desultory preaching, they still continue to attend meeting on the Sabbath day. But much as he saw the need of such a work, he naturally hesitated before putting his thoughts on paper; as who would not, in view of the general sentiment respecting criticism of preaching? The matter came to a head, however, in the following manner: A much respected but wordy brother had occupied the time of the congregation for one hour. Try as I would, I could get nothing coherent from the sermon to set down in the record. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Preaching and Public Speaking: A Manual for the Use of Preachers Now after many years, when the other trees began to bear abundantly, each laborer betook himself to a special part of the garden, and soon became burdened with the much fruit thereof. And the sacred tree became no one's care. The weeds grew rank about its trunk, and many Of its limbs began to show dry ends; for the life-giving stream was used elsewhere. On stated days the laborers assembled about the tree, and many were sorrowful when they looked upon it, and the people murmured among themselves when they saw how it' was neglected. Nevertheless the laborers went back again, each to his burdensome labors, and forgot all about it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. According to the Reformers, preaching is the word of God. As the word of God, preaching is a foundation for the church. It is also vital for the personal growth of a Christian. But Christians are poorly equipped to understand how preaching is the word of God. Some Christians look for preaching that closely reproduces the text in the Bible. Other Christians look for preaching that creates maximal emotional and existential impact. And there is a lot of name-calling with Christians accusing preachers of "not preaching the word." But what type of preaching is the word of God? The purpose of this book is to equip Christians to understand how preaching can be God speaking. It accomplishes this with a survey of the problem in the history of the church, a detailed overview of key biblical texts, and finally the application of the contemporary philosophical tool of speech act theory.
