Principles of Bone X-Ray Diagnosis follows the method set by Principles of Chest X-ray Diagnosis (Simon, 1956) in placing more value in the grouping of x-ray material according to the type of x-ray shadow rather than the clinical disease label. Biochemical and hematological values quoted throughout the book, especially in the captions to figures, are all from the Department of Pathology, St. Bartholomew's Hospital. This book is organized into 12 chapters. Much of the original text has been used in this third edition, though some changes of order have been made to give a more logical approach to the description of the bone changes seen in various diseases. A chapter on widespread and regional reduction in bone density has been completely rewritten. This volume provides radiographs to illustrate every condition described. These radiographs were selected to illustrate the principles of bone x-ray diagnosis rather than to make a complete catalogue of all the conditions referred. The latest of a series of publications based on workshops sponsored by the Committee on Military Nutrition Research, this book's focus on emerging technologies for nutrition research arose from a concern among scientists at the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine that traditional nutrition research, using standard techniques, centered more on complex issues of the maintenance or enhancement of performance, and might not be sufficiently substantive either to measure changes in performance or to predict the effects on performance of stresses soldiers commonly experience in operational environments. The committee's task was to identify and evaluate new technologies to determine whether they could help resolve important issues in military nutrition research. CT The rapid transfer of new knowledge concerning the pathogenesis, diagnosis, preven tion, and treatment of disease into clinical practice has always been a major challenge in medicine. This challenge is particularly difficult to meet in osteoporosis, not only because has been so much new knowledge generated in recent years, but also because this there disorder has not caught the attention of many practicing physicians. The goal of this volume is to help primary care physicians develop a better understanding of osteoporosis and a more effective approach to diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. As primary care physicians become more and more responsible for the maintenance of health and the prevention of disease, osteoporosis must become one of their important concerns. The magnitude of the problem of osteoporosis has been widely publicized. Within the next 30 years, the cost of hip fractures alone is expected to exceed $40 billion a year in the United States and will be a major cause ofincreased mortality. In addition, vertebral crush fractures will cripple more and more of our elderly population, both men and women. This enormous toll is not inevitable. In the UK, services for identifying patients at risk of fracture are still in their infancy and are not uniformly available throughout the country. This situation is, however, likely to improve particularly fol lowing the publication of the Royal College of Physicians report "Osteoporosis -clinical guidelines for prevention and treatment" and the recognition in "Our Healthier Nation" that osteoporosis pre vention should be included as a target to achieve a reduction of 20% in accidents by 2010.
