Proteins, Pep tides and Amino Acids SourceBook is the second in a series of reference books conceived to cover the explosive growth in commercially available biological reagents. The success of our first reference work, Source Book of Enzymes published in 1997, encouraged us to continue this series. Choosing proteins, peptides, and amino acids as the subject matter for the second volume was simple, given their preeminence in regulating biochemical processes and their importance to modern molecular biology. The SourceBook series was inspired by our difficulty in locating a suitable replacement for a depleted reagent in the midst of an urgent research project. To our dismay, we found the reagent supplier out of business and the product line no longer available. Other reagent catalogs on our library bookshelf offered a narrow selection and incom plete functional information. We were ultimately able to locate a satisfactory alternative only by making countless inquiries and paging through innumerable product catalogs and technical data sheets. We needed-but could not find-a single resource that cataloged available compounds, organized them in a logical and accessible format, provided critical technical information to distinguish one from another, and told us where we could buy them.

The role of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in fields as diverse as medicine, economics, linguistics, logical analysis and industry continues to grow in scope and importance. AI has become integral to the effective functioning of much of the technical infrastructure we all now take for granted as part of our daily lives. This book presents the papers from the 21st biennial European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, ECAI 2014, held in Prague, Czech Republic, in August 2014. The ECAI conference remains Europe's principal opportunity for researchers and practitioners of Artificial Intelligence to gather and to discuss the latest trends and challenges in all subfields of AI, as well as to demonstrate innovative applications and uses of advanced AI technology. Included here are the 158 long papers and 94 short papers selected for presentation at the conference. Many of the papers cover the fields of knowledge representation, reasoning and logic as well as agent-based and multi-agent systems, machine learning, and data mining. The proceedings of PAIS 2014 and the PAIS System Demonstrations are also included in this volume, which will be of interest to all those wishing to keep abreast of the latest developments in the field of AI.

This book presents a comprehensive treatment of important new ideas on Dirac operators and Dirac cohomology. Using Dirac operators as a unifying theme, the authors demonstrate how some of the most important results in representation theory fit together when viewed from this perspective. The book is an excellent contribution to the mathematical literature of representation theory, and this self-contained exposition offers a systematic examination and panoramic view of the subject. The material will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in representation theory, differential geometry, and physics.

Bradykinin is frequently referred to as an elusive substance; the editor of a comprehensive volume dealing with kinins thus has a difficult task. The com plexity of the issues calls for a large number of contributors who approach the topics from the various angles that are dictated by the sometimes divergent views of the individuals. The editor saw no reason to prescribe the mode of presentation, which was left to the authors and accounts for the variety of approaches. Contributors from nine countries were asked to participate in the volume. The chapters were organized to present, first, the history of the discoveries and methods of approach to kinin research. Then follows a discussion of the enzymes that release kinins, their substrates, and other enzymes that inactivate the peptides. If the release of kinin is important, then the inhibition of the releasing enzymes is of obvious interest and is described. Since the measurement of kinin ogen levels in blood has been frequently used as an indicator of kinin liberation, in addition to a separate chapter, kininogens are also mentioned where the functions of kinins are discussed. The conclusions drawn from establishing structure-action relationships for many analogs and the actions of kinins are indicated and summarized.

Organic Structure Determination Using 2-D NMR Spectroscopy: A Problem-Based Approach, Second Edition, is a primary text for a course in two-dimensional (2-D) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques, with the goal to learn to identify organic molecular structure. It presents strategies for assigning resonances to known structures and for deducing structures of unknown organic molecules based on their NMR spectra. The book begins with a discussion of the NMR technique, while subsequent chapters cover instrumental considerations; data collection, processing, and plotting; chemical shifts; symmetry and topicity; through-bond effects; and through-space effects. The book also covers molecular dynamics; strategies for assigning resonances to atoms within a molecule; strategies for elucidating unknown molecular structures; simple and complex assignment problems; and simple and complex unknown problems. Each chapter includes problems that will enable readers to test their understanding of the material discussed. The book contains 30 known and 30 unknown structure determination problems. It also features a supporting website from which instructors can download the structures of the unknowns in selected chapters, digital versions of all figures, and raw data sets for processing. This book will stand as a single source to which instructors and students can go to obtain a comprehensive compendium of NMR problems of varying difficulty. Like the first Abel Symposium, held in 2004, the Abel Symposium 2015 focused on operator algebras. It is interesting to see the remarkable advances that have been made in operator algebras over these years, which strikingly illustrate the vitality of the field. A total of 26 talks were given at the symposium on a variety of themes, all highlighting the richness of the subject. The field of operator algebras was created in the 1930s and was motivated by problems of quantum mechanics. It has subsequently developed well beyond its initial intended realm of applications and expanded into such diverse areas of mathematics as representation theory, dynamical systems, differential geometry, number theory and quantum algebra. One branch, known as “noncommutative geometry”, has become a powerful tool for studying phenomena that are beyond the reach of classical analysis. This volume includes research papers that present new results, surveys that discuss the development of a specific line of research, and articles that offer a combination of survey and research. These contributions provide a multifaceted portrait of beautiful mathematics that both newcomers to the field of operator algebras and seasoned researchers alike will appreciate.

The Generalized Nets (GNs) are extensions of Petri nets and of different Petri nets modifications, introduced by the author (1982). In the book, definitions and the basic properties of GNs are given. The GNs extensions and reductions are discussed. GNs, which describe the functioning and results of the work of different types of petri nets, different types of finite automata and of Turing machines, are given. Over the GNs are defined different operations, relations and operators. They can also be transferred onto other nets. Many open problems in the GNs theory are given.
