Throughout the last century it was regarded as one of the most important points of reference of all South Africa explorers, and few of any note failed to reach it. Owing to its bad name, and perhaps to some extent to its inaccessibility, it was held responsible for the death or illness of anyone who happened to visit it. If the man died near the Zambesi, the case was of course regarded as proven, and no account was taken of his previous experiences or the countries through which he had passed before reaching the supposed fatal spot. If he died away from the Zambesi, it was promptly assumed that' the fatal illness really originated there and was carried by him to the place of his actual demise. This, added to the.theory, held until quite recently, that the deadly miasma of river valleys is the sole cause of malaria and allied complaints, established a reputation for the Zambesi, which everyone seems to take for granted. It will be found, however, that in recent years the experience of people who have lived there for a considerable period goes to show that, reasonable hygienic precautions being taken, the Zambesi valley is probably as healthy as any other uncivilized part of South Africa. A few may no doubt be found who with a view to proclaiming their own remarkable hardihood, will descant on the deadliness of the place. These, however, may be treated with the contempt they deserve. It is noteworthy that the "Zambesi" Natives are notorious throughout South Africa for their superior physique and general hardihood, and as they are racially closely allied to other tribes who do not live near the river and do licit possess these characteristics, the circumstances would tend to show...
