Excerpt from Proceedings of the Supreme Council of Sovereign Grand Inspectors-General of the Thirty-Third and Last Degree, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite for the Dominion of Canada: Held at Their "Grand East, Montreal," 45°, 31' N. Lat., And 73°, 20' W. Long., Meridian of Greenwich, on the Ninth Day of October, A. D. 1878 Some of our Sister Councils have had to mourn the loss by deal/c during the past year of several invaluable members, and our warmest sympathy for such losses has been conveyed on behalf of our Council to those who have suffered. It is known that the Masonic Fraternity has, in common with their other fellow creatures, been desolated by the very terrible yellow fever plague that has been committing such ravages in some of the Southern parts of the United States, doubtless, permitted by' God for some good purpose of his own. Of course many of our Brethren, members of the A. Scottish Rite must have succumbed to the common calamity. They are at rest, but to those they have left behind, sympathy and help, where possible, must be acceptable and comforting. You will probably choose to have an embodiment of your sentiments hereon recorded and forwarded. I offer, in conclusion, some general remarks, for which I trust I shall not be deemed presumptuous. Notice of motion was given last year in relation to the absence of Members of the Supreme Council from our annual sessions, and the declaring their seats vacant as Active Members. You are aware that some Brethren have not hitherto appeared at all - not thinking it. Worth while even to forward written apologies and excuses. This is neither correct nor courteous, and should not be. The work of the As. And Scottish Rite should be shared and carried on by all. It does seem to me that the Rite is looked upon by some, more as a kind of Side Degree than as a distinct and important body, to belong to which ought to be deemed a privilege. It would seem that Brethren, having attained high rank in other branches of Freemasonry, (for which they had, how ever, to work), consider the right of placing 33° opposite their names as a kind of reward for services foreign to the and Scottish Rite. This is unfair to their Brother 33rds, who, instead, acknowledge their specific duties to the Rite and strive to fulfil them. Our numbers are necessarily few, and it is of importance, therefore, that every active 33rd should give to our body the benefit of his presence and counsel once a year. The actual meeting and communion together Should have a good effect, and conduce to good fellowship, and our Subordinate Bodies cannot fail to appreciate our labours better, when the published proceed ings Show them, that their Active Chiefs take a palpable and practical interest in their welfare, as well as that of the Rite generally. D. 1881 I am also pleased to be able to report that much interest is manifested in the Bodies of the Rite by the members generally, that the increase of members has been large and of the very best kind, that peace and harmony prevail, and that there has been marked progress in the manner of conferring the different Degrees. The Rose Croix Chapter has not progressed as fast as the Lodge of Perfection, partly Owing to the short time the Bodies have been in operation, and partly owing to the neglect Of his duties by the Secretary. The Returns and fees were promptly forwarded from both Bodies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Proceedings of the Supreme Council of Sovereign Grand Inspectors-General of the Thirty-Third and Last Degree, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite for the Dominion of Canada: Annual Session, City of Toronto, Ontario, 24th Day of October, 1900 We have been called together for the performance of such duties as the Statutes and Regulations of the Order impose upon us, and such as devolve upon us as Sovereign Grand inspectors-general. These duties require at our hands such legislation for the Order as will promote the best interests of the influential Motherhood whose government is committed to our care. The trust vested in you of legislating for the Rite is by no means an unimportant one. The jurisdiction now actually occupied by the Supreme Body embraces every Province in our broad Dominion. The membership is made up of men who have learned from the Blue Lodge the value and excellency of Freemasonry, and whose love for it has induced them to persevere and study the system to the end in an intelligent manner.
