Excerpt from Elementary Experiments in Psychology The president of a college asked a distinguished psychologist how much money his board ought to appropriate for the equip ment of a fair elementary laboratory. The reply came: Three thousand dollars a year for a good instructor and one dollar for paper and pins. This manual supplies the paper and pins and, in part, the instructor. The experiments are independent and self-explana tory. Provided the manual is used in connection with the customary elementary text-book or lectures, the experiments require no introduction; the directions are adequate, and the running comment furnishes the set ting for each step and enables the student to see the significance of the results. The beginner needs much help in his experiments in psychology, and there is no more practical way of giving it than through a manual. Excerpt from Experimental Psychology and Pedagogy: For Teachers, Normal Colleges, and Universities The present volume has found a wide sale in Germany, and the translator trusts it will be of help to students and teachers in Britain and America. It makes no claim to be a complete text-book or manual of experimental psychology. The author emphasises this in his preface. It merely deals with those methods of experimental psychology that are particularly adapted to educational purposes. The author himself has carried out many experiments and these he takes as a foundation for his work. Many are not exact, and many are merely tentative, but such work is of value to the beginner, for it shows him what he must expect in his own work, and the suggestions of the author as to where further experiments are required are in valuable. Most of these experiments were carried out in the Psychological Institute of the Leipsic Teachers' Associa tion, an institute founded and supported by an associa tion of elementary school teachers. This should prove a stimulus to British associations to follow on the same lines. Only by making education a science can teachers hope to raise the status of their profession. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Experimental Psychology In endeavouring to supply this want, I do not attempt to offer a systematic Psychology. On the contrary, I assume that the student is already familiar with the elements of general psychology.1 He may have had the opportunity of attending an introductory course of lectures on the subject which were accompanied by demonstrations, and in that case he will have observed how artificial is the line of cleavage between general and experimental psychology. Excerpt from On Double Consciousness: Experimental Psychological Studies It is known that of late years, in France, a great scientific movement has come about in favor of experimental psychology. While the professors of our High Schools and Universities are continuing to teach an antiquated science, whose only method is that of introspection, there has arisen on all sides in the philosophical reviews, and even in journals strictly medical, a body of work in which the investigation of mental phenomena is conducted according to the methods of natural science. Incontestably, the forerunner of this activity in psychological inquiry was M. Taine, who published in 1869 an important treatise upon "The Understanding." With remarkable penetration M. Taine foresaw, to a certain extent, the most important results obtained in recent years. Thus, the entire chapter upon "Images" may still be consulted with profit. The real inaugurator of the psychological movement proper, is M. Ribot. The psychologists of France owe much to M. Ribot. Excerpt from Outlines for Experimental Psychology Perhaps the only evidences of originality to be discerned in the Outline and Manual are to be found in the arrangement of subject matter and in the formulation of a few of the experiments. I have not hesitated to appropriate useful experiments from books and teachers, regardless of the time or place of their original de scription. Wherever possible, my indebtedness to these sources is indicated by their inclusion among the references. In the formu lation of instructions for several of the experiments on association and imagery I have profited by suggestions from unpublished laboratory outlines used by Prof. R. S.
