Excerpt from Philadelphia, Vol. 1: A History of the City and Its People; A Record of 225 Years However, wide as the scene may be, the figure of the city must loom above\ everything else when its picture is to be drawn, and, if it seem to be the hub of the universe, as the narrative proceeds, this will be only because in holding the mirror up to truth Philadelphia is seen to occupy this position in reference to the rest of the country. It is in no mere antiquarian spirit of quest for separate or curious facts that this account will be rendered, but with some recognition of the philosophy lying back of what men and women for two centuries and a' quarter have done within the limits of the most interesting of all our American neighborhoods. It is sometimes said that Philadelphia's history was slow to begin in view of the settlements established at earlier dates on the Atlantic coast. St. Augus tine Quebec New York (a trading post in 1613 and a city in Boston and other towns may boast of an earlier establishment, as a result of accidents to navigators or by favor of their natural location. The site of Philadelphia lay some ninety miles up a bay which narrowed into a river, not eagerly ascended by mariners who were few and unskilful. The tasks of the explorer on the intricate coasts of a great unknown continent were many, and the Delaware escaped intelligent attention for many years. Excerpt from Memorial History of the City of Philadelphia, Vol. 1: From Its First Settlement to the Year 1895; Narrative and Critical History 1681-1895 Memorial History, now submitted to the public in these volumes, could appear at no more fitting time than in these closing years Of the Nineteenth Century. The Memorial History of New York holds a standard place in our literature. Its publishers have accepted the present under taking, and will follow the lines laid down in that sumptuous work. Guided by that experience, the present history will have features distinct from those in the New York publication. The first volume, which now goes from the press, will be a consecutive narrative of Philadelphia from the earliest to the present time. The second volume will embrace special chapters from writers of learning and eminence, illustrating in detail the rise of the city, what has been done towards free municipal government, the contributions Of Phila delphia to literature, art, religion, finance, and those vast industrial enterprises which command the attention and admiration of the world. There is no study more instructive than that of the building of a city, - for the city is an epitome Of national thought and ambition. The chronicles from which have been drawn the sources of this narrative, show that the highest phase of American achievement is expressed in the development of Philadelphia. While we note the splendor, the triumphs, perhaps, likewise the limitations of American character - we see the same principle of religious freedom which came with Penn, the magnanimous philosophy Of Franklin, the philanthropy of Girard, the financial foresight of Biddle - the achievements Of those captains Of industry who are winning victories of peace which add to the renown of the age. The third volume will be what is called The Family History of Philadelphia. It will present, as far as can be attained, a chrono logical and genealogical table Of every representative family who has resided in Philadelphia since the arrival of Penn. It is proposed to embrace whoever may have attained distinction in any walk Of life professional men, citizens in business, soldiers, those who have received civic and political honors. Great pains have been taken to make this thorough. Available archives, such as are found in our public libraries, historical societies, court registers, church records, have been carefully studied, to the end that the volume may possess entire accuracy. The editor has received from private sources valua ble information, and whatever may contribute to a complete history of the families Of those who have made Philadelphia, will be grate fully received. Excerpt from History of Philadelphia, 1609-1884, Vol. 1 of 3 The desire to leave nothing untold which could in any way throw light upon the history of men, events, and institutions in Philadelphia has made it impossible at times to escape repetition. Facts, which fall within the proper cognizance of the narrative of general events, will sometimes reappear in another shape in the records of institutions or in special chapters. But the fault will claim the reader's indulgence, because intelligent persons prefer a twice-told tale to one neglected or half tad. Several of the themes or chapters of the homogeneous whole have been treated by those who have some particular association or long acquaintance with the subject. In the diversity of writers there will of course be variety of opinions, but they make good the poet's description.
