Maroon 5 is an alternative-rock band formed in Los Angeles, CA and is composed of members Adam Levine (vocals and guitar), James Valentine (guitar), Jesse Carmichael (keyboard), Mickey Madden (bass guitar), and Matt Flynn (drums). They haven’t always been the platinum-selling band that they are now. Rather, the members of Maroon 5 started out like any other band did: in a garage. More specifically, Jesse Carmichael’s garage in Malibu, CA. They also didn’t start with the moniker of Maroon 5: Previously, they were Kara’s Flowers. It wasn’t until after a handful of changes in band members, a few deals (including Reprise Records and Warner Brothers), and a cross country trip for Adam and Jesse that they officially adopted a new name of Maroon 5 in 2001. Maroon 5 released their first album in mid-2002, then hit the road on the Jeep World Outside tour with other notable up-and-comers like Train and O.A.R. and with Sheryl Crow headlining. After that tour, they opened for John Mayer in early 2003. Guitarist James Valentine had actually become friends with John Mayer back in 1996 at Berklee College of Music. When they ran into each other again in 2002, John Mayer listened to Maroon 5’s music and loved it, so he invited them to go on tour with him. Maroon 5 didn’t stop touring there, though. In fact, they continued touring for almost two more years, bringing their total time spent non-stop on the road to a little more than three years! One of the band’s favorite experiences during this time was opening for The Rolling Stones.

ABOUT THE BOOK Evanescence is known for its heavy guitar riffs and the melodic voice of singer Amy Lee. Her lyrics are also highly reflective and portray a brutal honesty in talking about personal pain. This honesty coupled with the bands distinctive sound earned them a loyal fanbase that stuck with the band through album delays and lineup alterations. Lee has always been the face of the band, especially after Moodys departure, and generally dictates the creative direction and focus of the group. Here's an illuminating look inside the group's hit songs. MEET THE AUTHOR Dave Beaudrie is a graduate and valedictorian of Michigan State University with a B.A. in Advertising. He also studied Theatre and has performed in multiple productions around the country. He is a professional screenwriter as well with several projects either produced or in pre-production. He is licensed as a security specialist in the state of California and worked in the field for several years. Beaudrie is an avid mixed martial arts fan and has written extensively on the subject. He writes comedy as well under a pen name and resides in Los Angeles. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK On "What You Want": Lee had struggled with what she really wanted to do musically and with her life between the albums The Open Door and Evanescence. What You Want was a reminder to her fans and to herself that the band was her main focus and thats what she wanted her life to be about again. The video was shot in New York and featured Lee walking down the Brooklyn Bridge while reminiscing about the past. At the end, she jumps off the bridge and is met safely at the bottom by her bandmates. They then walk off together to forge a new musical destiny. On "Sweet Sacrifice": The opening lyrics of the song clearly reference being freed from the confines of an ugly relationship. The unchaining refers to finally breaking free of the unhealthy emotional ties that keep people in romances that are toxic to them. The next verse then addresses gathering the courage to face your fears and break away from those who hurt you. The song also addresses the abuser with lines such as you know you live to break me and you love to hate me, dont you, honey? Instead of becoming a sacrifice to the altar of a lovers cruelty, the song preaches breaking away and taking a stand for oneself. ABOUT THE BOOK Marshall Mathers, known to most of the world as iconic rapper Eminem, is no stranger to controversy. However, he is also no stranger to creative genius. The music industry became fascinated with Eminem when he burst onto the scene in 1999 with mega-producer Dr. Dre, touting The Slim Shady LP, an album riddled with graphic tales of Eminems demented alter-ego, Slim Shady. From there, Eminems music became a calling card for the psychopath in all of us, making famous typically taboo lines such as: You think I wont choke no whore till the vocal cords dont work in her throat no more? (From Kill You off of the Marshall Mathers LP.) MEET THE AUTHOR Acamea Deadwiler is a freelance writer that has been featured in several publications, and also a columnist with Examiner.com. She is a lover of all things art, entertainment and sports. Currently residing in Nevada, Acamea is completing a Masters Degree in Sports Administration at Valparaiso University. You may follow her on Twitter @acameald. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK It wasn't just the shock value, however, that had fans hooked. The white rapper with the bleached-blonde hair could actually spit. Eminem's delivery and use of metaphors was lethal. His storytelling was so witty, one could not help but laugh at things that would normally cause one to cringe. As deranged and violent as his music portrayed him to be, Eminem was truly talented. After allowing Slim Shady to dominate most of his albums, Eminem reinvented himself, and did so magnificently with Recovery, his most personal and subdued album to date. No more gimmicks. No blonde hair, no funny skits and no tales of reckless escapades. Just a supremely gifted MC. ABOUT THE BOOK For Shawn Carter, there is a no more fitting moniker than his self-given The Hustler. The artist known as Jay-Z released his first solo album in 1996, and proceeded to release a new one every single subsequent year until 2003; when he released The Black Album, his supposedly final record. However, three years later he was at it again. To release eight albums in as many years takes a hustlers ambition indeed. That is why Jay-Z sits on the throne of todays hip-hop world. He has worked hard to get there. He has done it all: hit songs, classic albums, clothing lines, fragrances, shoe deals, a book, nightclubs, champagne, and a cosmetics line. MEET THE AUTHOR Acamea Deadwiler is a freelance writer that has been featured in several publications, and also a columnist with Examiner.com. She is a lover of all things art, entertainment and sports. Currently residing in Nevada, Acamea is completing a Masters Degree in Sports Administration at Valparaiso University. You may follow her on Twitter @acameald. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Classic, classic, classic. Written three times for emphasis, Reasonable Doubt, is a classic hip-hop album. Easily one of the top five releases in the genres history. Jay-Z is at his ultimate creative, lyrical, maniacal, original, storytelling, conscious, and subtle best. His flow, even on the more radio-friendly tracks, is impeccable. On this album, he is a poet and a renaissance man. This is the artist, in every sense of the word, that original fans know and love. On "Song Cry": The artist admits his pain. The result of a failed relationship, and a love lost. However, he also admits his flaws. Flaws that ultimately led to the hurt he now feels. Jay-Z fully understands why his girl no longer wants him. His wounds are self-inflicted, but that does not make them any less agonizing. So, he attempts to heal in the best way that he knows how; by bleeding all over this track. Fleetwood Mac is a rare rock band breed. Their musical triumphs are vast and storied, but their inner, soap opera relationships are just as legendary as their hit records. The band originally formed with Mick Fleetwood, John and Christine McVie in 1967. But it wasn’t until 1975 that guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and then-girlfriend and musical partner, Stevie Nicks, joined and the best-known incarnation of the group came together. Looking to replace recently departed guitarist, Bob Welch, Fleetwood heard Buckingham-Nicks’ self-titled album, and liked it enough to ask for an introduction to Buckingham. Fleetwood invited him to join Fleetwood Mac, but he would only agree on one condition: Nicks would become a member of the band as well. The new lineup included three members who could write songs and sing lead vocals - Christine McVie, Buckingham and Nicks, who all brought different sensibilities to their lyrics. The new band broke through with the self-titled album, Fleetwood Mac (1975), which sold over five million copies.

When 16 year old Robyn Rihanna Fenty first moved to the United States to pursue a career in music, there was no indication that she would become anything other than another flash-in-the-pan, sub-Beyonce pop starlet. Born and raised in a working class area of Saint Michael parish in south-west Barbados, Rihanna was the eldest daughter of Monica Braithwaite and Ronald Fenty. Her father struggled with addictions to crack cocaine and alcohol, leading to her parents’ divorce when Rihanna was 14, after which she maintained contact with her father, but continued living with her mother and two younger brothers, Rorrey and Rajad. Like many teenage girls, she formed a singing group with friends and dreamt of becoming a pop star. However, unlike many teenage girls, Rihanna also benefitted from good connections. When she discovered two US record executives were holidaying on her home island, an audition for her group was arranged by mutual friends. History has forgotten the other two members of Rihanna’s singing group, but in Miss Fenty, record execs Carl Sturken and Eric Rogers saw something marketable. Jay Z did too. He signed her to Def Jam during his brief tenure as president allowing for the release of two albums of reggae-tinged R&B that would make her name. The caribbean influences in Rihanna’s early releases made her a refreshing novelty for R&B fans, but if that was all she had to offer, no doubt by now “Rihanna” would be just another footnote in pop history, alongside Ashanti, Amerie, or Christina Milian (remember them?). But Rihanna had something else. Perhaps inspired by her oft-cited idol Madonna, she has demonstrated an ability to shapeshift in a way that is always uncannily ahead of the trend.

ABOUT THE BOOK Bryan Adams got into the music business as a young teenager and he has been performing around the world ever since. Over 35 years later, Adams has 10 studio albums, five live albums, five compilation albums, and two movie soundtracks to his credit. His songs have also been featured in films such as Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Don Juan DeMarco. Adams is also a social activist and an accomplished photographer, working with top magazines and fashion designers while still continuing his music career. Adams got into music at a young age, dropping out of high school to pursue his dream of becoming a singer and guitar player. A dishwashing job allowed him to afford his first guitar and his upstart career took a turn for the better when he met Jim Vallance in 1978. Vallance had been a successful drummer but was now looking to start a solo career. Recognizing Adams’ talent, Vallance took the younger man under his wing and the two started writing songs together. Vallance used his connections to get them into the studio and Adams would then sing the lyrics for their songs. They quickly got signed to a record deal later that year. The duo started out writing and recording songs that were included in other artists’ albums but Adams then released a solo album worldwide in 1980, though it was not distributed in the United States. He followed that album up with a second in 1981 that did see a U.S. release. His third album Cuts Like a Knife came out in 1983 and propelled Adams into international stardom, thanks in part to the success of lead single Straight From the Heart. Adams followed the album up with Reckless in 1984 and the record became his all-time best seller. Summer of ‘69 and Heaven were two of the main singles off the album and helped push sales to over 5 million in the United States. His popularity carried into the 90s with multiple albums landing on the Billboard charts both internationally and domestically, though his albums tended to sell better in the U.K. and Canada compared to the United States. (Everything I Do) I Do For You was an international hit single that Adams wrote and performed as the theme song to the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Several compilation and “Best-Of” albums also came out throughout the decade as Adams continued to tour worldwide in support of his studio releases. Adams became more involved in film soundtracks as the new millenium began, writing and recording music for films such as Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, The Guardian, and Bobby. More studio albums followed, though sales were lower than what they had been during his peak in the 80s. He continues to tour, record music and run his charity foundation that focuses on providing educational opportunities for children around the world. Adams has proven himself a special artist in part because of his versatility. He is known for rock anthems such as Summer of ‘69 while also associated with sentimental ballads such as Please Forgive Me. Add in his work in feature film scores and his photography success and it’s easy to see why Adams’ work has endured for decades... Buy the book to continue reading! Follow @hyperink on Twitter! Neil Kingsblood is a white middle-class man who discovers, while researching his family background, that he is directly descended from an African adventurer on the American frontier. Through various machinations, Kingsblood loses his banking job and takes a lesser one. He begins to be treated differently by former acquaintances, despite the lack of visible black African ancestry. He is forced to choose between continuing what he has come to see as a hollow existence in the white community and taking on the oppressed minority status of the black community. After Kingsblood tells several white friends about his newfound ancestry, the news quickly spreads, and he finds that acquaintances change their behavior toward him. He engages in a quixotic struggle against the racism newly apparent but widespread in his community.

Book excerpt: Neil Kingsblood is a white middle-class man who discovers, while researching his family background, that he is directly descended from an African adventurer on the American frontier.

At once both guide book and provocation, this is an indispensable companion for students and practitioners of applied theatre. It addresses all key aspects: principles, origins, politics and aesthetics in a concise and accessible style designed to appeal both to those who have recently discovered this sub-discipline and to experienced practitioners and academics. Part 1 is divided into two chapters. The first introduces the sub-discipline of Theatre for Development, covering its origins, principles and history, and providing an overview of theatre for development in Western contexts as well as in Africa, Asia, the Indian Subcontinent and Latin America. The second focuses upon theoretical and philosophical issues confronting the discipline and its relationship to contemporary politics, as well as considering its future role. Part 2 consists of seven chapters contributed by leading figures and current practitioners from around the world and covering a diverse range of themes, methodologies and aesthetic approaches. One chapter offers a series of case studies concerned with sexual health education and HIV prevention, drawn from practitioners working in Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, Southern Africa, and China. Other chapters include studies of intercultural theatre in the Peruvian Amazon; a programme of applied theatre conducted in schools in Canterbury, New Zealand, following the 2010 earthquake; an attempt to reinvigorate a community theatre group in South Brazil; and an exchange between a Guatemalan arts collective and a Dutch youth theatre company, besides others.
