When 16 year old Robyn Rihanna Fenty first moved to the United States to pursue a career in music, there was no indication that she would become anything other than another flash-in-the-pan, sub-Beyonce pop starlet. Born and raised in a working class area of Saint Michael parish in south-west Barbados, Rihanna was the eldest daughter of Monica Braithwaite and Ronald Fenty. Her father struggled with addictions to crack cocaine and alcohol, leading to her parents’ divorce when Rihanna was 14, after which she maintained contact with her father, but continued living with her mother and two younger brothers, Rorrey and Rajad. Like many teenage girls, she formed a singing group with friends and dreamt of becoming a pop star. However, unlike many teenage girls, Rihanna also benefitted from good connections. When she discovered two US record executives were holidaying on her home island, an audition for her group was arranged by mutual friends. History has forgotten the other two members of Rihanna’s singing group, but in Miss Fenty, record execs Carl Sturken and Eric Rogers saw something marketable. Jay Z did too. He signed her to Def Jam during his brief tenure as president allowing for the release of two albums of reggae-tinged R&B that would make her name. The caribbean influences in Rihanna’s early releases made her a refreshing novelty for R&B fans, but if that was all she had to offer, no doubt by now “Rihanna” would be just another footnote in pop history, alongside Ashanti, Amerie, or Christina Milian (remember them?). But Rihanna had something else. Perhaps inspired by her oft-cited idol Madonna, she has demonstrated an ability to shapeshift in a way that is always uncannily ahead of the trend.

Maroon 5 is an alternative-rock band formed in Los Angeles, CA and is composed of members Adam Levine (vocals and guitar), James Valentine (guitar), Jesse Carmichael (keyboard), Mickey Madden (bass guitar), and Matt Flynn (drums). They haven’t always been the platinum-selling band that they are now. Rather, the members of Maroon 5 started out like any other band did: in a garage. More specifically, Jesse Carmichael’s garage in Malibu, CA. They also didn’t start with the moniker of Maroon 5: Previously, they were Kara’s Flowers. It wasn’t until after a handful of changes in band members, a few deals (including Reprise Records and Warner Brothers), and a cross country trip for Adam and Jesse that they officially adopted a new name of Maroon 5 in 2001. Maroon 5 released their first album in mid-2002, then hit the road on the Jeep World Outside tour with other notable up-and-comers like Train and O.A.R. and with Sheryl Crow headlining. After that tour, they opened for John Mayer in early 2003. Guitarist James Valentine had actually become friends with John Mayer back in 1996 at Berklee College of Music. When they ran into each other again in 2002, John Mayer listened to Maroon 5’s music and loved it, so he invited them to go on tour with him. Maroon 5 didn’t stop touring there, though. In fact, they continued touring for almost two more years, bringing their total time spent non-stop on the road to a little more than three years! One of the band’s favorite experiences during this time was opening for The Rolling Stones.

ABOUT THE BOOK Marshall Mathers, known to most of the world as iconic rapper Eminem, is no stranger to controversy. However, he is also no stranger to creative genius. The music industry became fascinated with Eminem when he burst onto the scene in 1999 with mega-producer Dr. Dre, touting The Slim Shady LP, an album riddled with graphic tales of Eminems demented alter-ego, Slim Shady. From there, Eminems music became a calling card for the psychopath in all of us, making famous typically taboo lines such as: You think I wont choke no whore till the vocal cords dont work in her throat no more? (From Kill You off of the Marshall Mathers LP.) MEET THE AUTHOR Acamea Deadwiler is a freelance writer that has been featured in several publications, and also a columnist with Examiner.com. She is a lover of all things art, entertainment and sports. Currently residing in Nevada, Acamea is completing a Masters Degree in Sports Administration at Valparaiso University. You may follow her on Twitter @acameald. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK It wasn't just the shock value, however, that had fans hooked. The white rapper with the bleached-blonde hair could actually spit. Eminem's delivery and use of metaphors was lethal. His storytelling was so witty, one could not help but laugh at things that would normally cause one to cringe. As deranged and violent as his music portrayed him to be, Eminem was truly talented. After allowing Slim Shady to dominate most of his albums, Eminem reinvented himself, and did so magnificently with Recovery, his most personal and subdued album to date. No more gimmicks. No blonde hair, no funny skits and no tales of reckless escapades. Just a supremely gifted MC. ABOUT THE BOOK For Shawn Carter, there is a no more fitting moniker than his self-given The Hustler. The artist known as Jay-Z released his first solo album in 1996, and proceeded to release a new one every single subsequent year until 2003; when he released The Black Album, his supposedly final record. However, three years later he was at it again. To release eight albums in as many years takes a hustlers ambition indeed. That is why Jay-Z sits on the throne of todays hip-hop world. He has worked hard to get there. He has done it all: hit songs, classic albums, clothing lines, fragrances, shoe deals, a book, nightclubs, champagne, and a cosmetics line. MEET THE AUTHOR Acamea Deadwiler is a freelance writer that has been featured in several publications, and also a columnist with Examiner.com. She is a lover of all things art, entertainment and sports. Currently residing in Nevada, Acamea is completing a Masters Degree in Sports Administration at Valparaiso University. You may follow her on Twitter @acameald. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Classic, classic, classic. Written three times for emphasis, Reasonable Doubt, is a classic hip-hop album. Easily one of the top five releases in the genres history. Jay-Z is at his ultimate creative, lyrical, maniacal, original, storytelling, conscious, and subtle best. His flow, even on the more radio-friendly tracks, is impeccable. On this album, he is a poet and a renaissance man. This is the artist, in every sense of the word, that original fans know and love. On "Song Cry": The artist admits his pain. The result of a failed relationship, and a love lost. However, he also admits his flaws. Flaws that ultimately led to the hurt he now feels. Jay-Z fully understands why his girl no longer wants him. His wounds are self-inflicted, but that does not make them any less agonizing. So, he attempts to heal in the best way that he knows how; by bleeding all over this track. ABOUT THE BOOK Bryan Adams got into the music business as a young teenager and he has been performing around the world ever since. Over 35 years later, Adams has 10 studio albums, five live albums, five compilation albums, and two movie soundtracks to his credit. His songs have also been featured in films such as Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Don Juan DeMarco. Adams is also a social activist and an accomplished photographer, working with top magazines and fashion designers while still continuing his music career. Adams got into music at a young age, dropping out of high school to pursue his dream of becoming a singer and guitar player. A dishwashing job allowed him to afford his first guitar and his upstart career took a turn for the better when he met Jim Vallance in 1978. Vallance had been a successful drummer but was now looking to start a solo career. Recognizing Adams’ talent, Vallance took the younger man under his wing and the two started writing songs together. Vallance used his connections to get them into the studio and Adams would then sing the lyrics for their songs. They quickly got signed to a record deal later that year. The duo started out writing and recording songs that were included in other artists’ albums but Adams then released a solo album worldwide in 1980, though it was not distributed in the United States. He followed that album up with a second in 1981 that did see a U.S. release. His third album Cuts Like a Knife came out in 1983 and propelled Adams into international stardom, thanks in part to the success of lead single Straight From the Heart. Adams followed the album up with Reckless in 1984 and the record became his all-time best seller. Summer of ‘69 and Heaven were two of the main singles off the album and helped push sales to over 5 million in the United States. His popularity carried into the 90s with multiple albums landing on the Billboard charts both internationally and domestically, though his albums tended to sell better in the U.K. and Canada compared to the United States. (Everything I Do) I Do For You was an international hit single that Adams wrote and performed as the theme song to the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Several compilation and “Best-Of” albums also came out throughout the decade as Adams continued to tour worldwide in support of his studio releases. Adams became more involved in film soundtracks as the new millenium began, writing and recording music for films such as Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, The Guardian, and Bobby. More studio albums followed, though sales were lower than what they had been during his peak in the 80s. He continues to tour, record music and run his charity foundation that focuses on providing educational opportunities for children around the world. Adams has proven himself a special artist in part because of his versatility. He is known for rock anthems such as Summer of ‘69 while also associated with sentimental ballads such as Please Forgive Me. Add in his work in feature film scores and his photography success and it’s easy to see why Adams’ work has endured for decades... Buy the book to continue reading! Follow @hyperink on Twitter! It was her mother Amanda Dawn "Mandy" Teefey, a former theatre actress, who inspired her to act. She received her first break on Barney & Friends in 2002, before being discovered by Disney when they were conducting a global casting call. She made two pilots which floundered before she was cast in the series Wizards of Waverley in 2008. During the series, she also kick-started her musical career. Typically cautious, she has said she decided to form a band to support her rather than go solo. A novel of the betrayals and rivalries that set a family of royals against each other in medieval England—and ignited a devastating conflict. Tumultuous. Passionate. Timeless. The marriage between Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry Plantagenet was like no other, born of power, politics, and an all-consuming, fiery love. Within two years of their wedding, Henry conquered England and together they ruled a vast kingdom. At first they worked to unify and repair their war-torn lands—before being torn apart by intrigue, adultery, and deadly revenge. Henry II dreams of enacting a new judicial system, a common law that would help foster peace. But a devastating betrayal by his closest confidante, Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, thrusts Henry into a rivalry that threatens to tear church and state apart. Eleanor, an accomplished ruler in her own right, steps in to help Henry quell the rebellions across their lands. But when she learns of her husband’s secret romance with the fair, young Rosamund de Clifford, it shatters her heart and ignites a bitter vengeance that will engulf their family in treachery and betrayal. As Eleanor takes the side of her sons against their father, these young royals, chafing for power of their own, wreak havoc across the continent, igniting a war whose tragic consequences Eleanor could never have foreseen.

Literature is often assumed to be monolingual: publishing rights are sold on the basis of linguistic territories and translated books are assumed to move from one “original” language to another. Yet a wide range of contemporary literary works mix and meld two or more languages, incorporating translation into their composition. How are these multilingual works translated, and what are the cultural and political implications of doing so? In Literature in Motion, Ellen Jones offers a new framework for understanding literary multilingualism, emphasizing how authors and translators can use its defamiliarizing and disruptive potential to resist conventions of form and dominant narratives about language and gender. Examining the connection between translation and multilingualism in contemporary literature, she considers its significance for the theory, practice, and publishing of literature in translation. Jones argues that translation does not conflict with multilingual writing’s subversive potential. Instead, we can understand multilingualism and translation as closely intertwined creative strategies through which other forms of textual and conceptual hybridity, fluidity, and disruption are explored. Jones addresses both well-known and understudied writers from across the American hemisphere who explore the spaces between languages as well as genders, genres, and textual versions, reading their work alongside their translations. She focuses on U.S. Latinx authors Susana Chávez-Silverman, Junot Díaz, and Giannina Braschi, who write in different forms of “Spanglish,” as well as the Brazilian writer Wilson Bueno, who combines Portuguese and Spanish, or “Portunhol,” with the indigenous language Guarani, and whose writing is rendered into “Frenglish” by Canadian translator Erín Moure.

Book excerpt: Literature is often assumed to be monolingual: publishing rights are sold on the basis of linguistic territories and translated books are assumed to move from one “original” language to another.
