"I am avalanche since I am big and white and knock things over and go whoooosh a lot and cover a lot of ground with much roaring and gusto and wheeling and spinning. By definition: a mountain getting its rocks off." (Ivan Gabriel Rehorek aka Avalanche)The Beat and Romantic traditions live on in the poetry of Ivan Rehorek (aka Avalanche), a veteran performer whose saxophone accompanied throaty-voiced delivery quickly galvanized Adelaide South Australia's poetryscene. Genuinely engaging, Avalanche quickly found a position on the committee of Adelaide's poetry establishment - Friendly Street - co-editing that year'santhology, his "cats" series of poems being especial favourites of both the city's poetry establishment and the burgeoning underground scene. In quick time he assembled his first book of verse, edited by veteran poet Dr. Graham Rowlands. Not content with the mainstream, "Avalanche" continued toperform on the underground circuit, contributing the cover art to transgender author Teri-Louise Kelly's ARTS-SA sponsored spoken word CD 'Love in Words andFeet'. For his debut work, A Rare and Vacant Hour, Rehorek assembled a collection of popular performance pieces and never before seen works assembled during his years as a beat club performer.

The cats in Ivan's poems bear strong resemblance to their owners - in fact, often seem to BE their owners. These stylish works of art are zany, quirky, cutting, sad, funny, frisky, boisterous, even at times reverential. They convey vast amounts of biographical information in easy to read bite-size pieces. Romanticism permeates Ivan's love lyrics, music lyrics and love-music lyrics. Even so, intense feeling is sometimes qualified by a kind of surrealism and by the use of striking puns which are paradoxically part of the lyricism. Whatever Romanticism remains in Ivan's other poems is sorely tested by his travels to arid regions and his portraits of unknown, well-known and too well-known characters. Vaclav Havel and Adolf Hitler share pages with 'Attila the Glum' and the deluded individual who could have been Beethoven-or perhaps Beethoven's cat.

Japhet has understood the chaos is all one whole, a scheme the size of Halural. What he can't figure out is whom to blame. It's hard to believe that anyone other than his cabal could have the patience or reach to achieve a plot this big, but it ought to be impossible for them to betray each other. He can't know Zigira's going out to bars and playing cards with the puppet master in the shadow of the Apropote's palace. Tibor's machinations haven't gone unnoticed, and he can't tell if his new ally means to keep him close or closer. Returned to the Cities with the shocking truths he learned, Ephrem will be drawn into the sphere of the cabal in a way he never imagined. And Alary will find herself the last line of defense between a man she's still coming to trust and a foe he isn't able or willing to face.

A big novel about a small town... When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations? A big novel about a small town, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.

“Goodness, Abdication really is good. I’m in awe of Juliet’s ability” (Jessica Fellowes, New York Times bestselling author of The World of Downton Abbey). England, 1936. A beloved king is dead, and by year’s end, the charismatic new monarch will give up his throne for love. The world is on the brink of war. And in the tumultuous intervening months, three outsiders will find themselves embroiled in the hidden truths, undeclared loves, unspoken sympathies, and covert complicities of a glittering high society in the throes of upheaval. After a long journey from her home in Barbados, May Thomas secures a position as a secretary and driver and opens her heart to a man seemingly beyond her reach. Outwardly affable American spinster Evangeline Nettlefold finds her place in the uppermost social circles, but her growing resentment toward her childhood friend Wallis Simpson predicts disaster. A friendship catapults Julian Richardson from his mother’s middle-class parlor to luxurious dinners with the king, yet he cannot forget those who struggle outside the gilded gates, nor his uneasy affection for May. As addictive as Downton Abbey, as poignant as The Remains of the Day, renowned historian Juliet Nicolson’s debut novel is a breathtaking story inspired by a love affair that shook the world at a time when order and chaos battled for supremacy.
