A road map for dismantling the fear and shame that keep you from living a free and authentic life In the aftermath of stress, disappointment, and trauma, people often fall into survival mode, even while a part of them longs for more. Juggling multiple demands and responsibilities keeps them busy, but not healed. As a survivor of sexual assault, racism, and evacuation from a civil war in Liberia, Dr. Thema Bryant knows intimately the work involved in healing. Having made the journey herself, in addition to guiding others as a clinical psychologist and ordained minister, Dr. Thema shows you how to reconnect with your authentic self and reclaim your time, your voice, your life. Signs of disconnection from self can take many forms, including people-pleasing, depression, anxiety, and resentment. Healing starts with recognizing and expressing emotions in an honest way and reconnecting with the neglected parts of yourself, but it can’t be done in a vacuum. Dr. Thema gives you the tools to meaningfully connect with your larger community, even if you face racism and sexism, heartbreak, grief, and trauma. Rather than shrinking in the face of life’s difficulties, you will discover in Homecoming the therapeutic approaches and spiritual practices to live a more expansive life characterized by empowerment, healthier relationships, gratitude, and a deeper sense of purpose.

Key aspects of our development become diverted or obstructed during early childhood, profoundly affecting our life outcomes long into adulthood, even before we have the ability to speak or think. Being genuine, i.e. allowing our true impulses to express, became dangerous in one way or another very early, and as a result we constructed habitual masks and inauthentic behaviours to survive and get by. These masks and behaviours rob us of our satisfaction, our ability to form and maintain nurturing relationships, we fail to get core needs met in the world, and we end up settling for what we get, feeling frustrated, isolated and confused about life, or running ourselves ragged pursuing everything that looks like success, whilst never really feeling we have won. This translates into many levels of depression - and depression is rife in our modern world. Whilst therapies have something to offer, they tend not to deal with the fundamental causes, and thus fail to deal with the issues for good. EMSRP addresses the source of the problem by reawakening the developmental processes that simply stopped in early life. Key aspects of the evolutionary heritage of every human being, yes including you, became frozen and failed to mature - leaving the person without the power to change life for the better. Without any complex rocket science EMSRP matures these life-skills without struggle, and this allows people to grow far beyond the limits they have unconsciously accepted as their lot. It has been very developed and trialled for nearly 20 years, and now therapists and counsellors are being trained and accredited to include it in their toolkits. It is particularly effective in alleviating depression, anxiety and life-stuckness. It has been highly effective with couples, individuals and groups. It is both insightful and practical, and is completed in an average of 15 fortnightly sessions. This book, whilst not a substitute for being facilitated through the process or training as an accredited facilitator, outlines in full the processes, the psychology and the philosophy behind each and every step. This is a book for the person who is hungry for an answer. I know that feeling. I was stuck in it for years and as a Coach and Speaker, I have noticed there is a constant theme for us all. We have read all of the success books, we have gone to the seminars but when we go to execute their wonderful information a feeling comes up. We lay in bed and just don't "feel" like doing what they suggest even though we know it will make our life better. That "feeling" stops us from executing one or more steps they suggest we take to make our lives better. I couldn't overcome that feeling either. Here I was an alcoholic, a sex addict, sugar addict, spending addict, tobacco addict, love addict, I had gone bankrupt, been through two horrific divorces, a child custody battle, I played two professional sports I never wanted to play and I contemplated suicide. None of the books showed me or explained where that feeling comes from, why we all get it and how to overcome it. Without that information, I couldn't execute all of their wonderful suggestions. So this is my story and how I took all of that great information from all of those great success teachers, I collated it and then added to it. I discuss where that feeling comes from, why we all get it and how to overcome it. This book bridges the gap. When you have this information, this skillset to overcome that "feeling" than you can put into place all of their incredible advice and have the personal and professional success we are all searching for.
