Excerpt from Sixty Years a Bookman: With Other Recollections and Reflections At the request of numerous friends, but with some hesitation, I have decided to issue a short account of certain of my experience and impressions during a long and delightful association with the book selling trade. In doing so, I hope that it may find a welcome with those members of the trade with whom I have been in happy association for over sixty years, and that my experience may be a stimulus to those who are still plodding their way among the many details of what I consider one of the most interesting and fascinating trades, a trade of which all the details are never learned. Excerpt from The Bancrofts: Recollections of Sixty Years Shortly after the close of our twenty years of management, in 1885, we devoted two volumes to an account of our careers both On and Off the' Stage. That work, after running through seven editions - a success as gratifying as it was surprising to two authors unused to the pen - was allowed to go out of print. Since then we have both been asked so often whether we had written, or why we did not write, our reminiscences, that the idea occurred to us of comprising within a single book the whole of our memories of sixty years. This is our apology for re-telling in a different way, and with that greater freedom which is born of the lapse of time, things which happened in the first half of that long period. In my task of compiling these memoirs I have been greatly aided by the words of my wife, which I have used wherever able to do so, and by the fact that every page has had the benefit of her help and counsel. For the egotism displayed in the following story I offer no excuse. Egotism is inseparable from autobiography. Excerpt from Sixty Years Memories of Art and Artists I have to apologize to the readers of this little book of memories for appearing before the public as a writer, for I have no claims to literary merit. My friends have urged me to this because they say I am one of the very few links remaining to connect the older generation of artists with the present schools, and they have thought what I might say of the long past and succeeding years might be of interest at the present time to students in art. Much of this story was written some six or seven years ago and put aside as of no value, but again I was urged to go on, and now have recorded my im pressions and clear recollections of times past. It was an adventure in which only rugged personalities engage, if the ideals held in View are great enough to overcome the terrors of the flesh, through the strength of their appeal to the spirit. The early settlers sought for a liberty in the wilds that was denied them in the cities of men. They sought to establish justice under the free skies of uncharted shores, because it was not given to them by the courts of the land they left. It was this sacrifice on their part that gave to American civilization its ever-enduring greatness, based upon the right to be free and the belief in justice.
