D. 907 1558); Compiled From Manuscript and Printed Records The History of Romsey Abbey has never yet been written, and it is very unlikely that, owing to the loss or destruction of the Monastic Rolls and Register, such a work will ever be accomplished. The account of the Abbey and Town, contained in the following pages, has been compiled from notes, collected out of MSS. and printed books, and pieced together by the Author to the best of his ability. An intimate familiarity with the beautiful Church, acquired during a six years residence in the town from 1892-98, moved him to search for information about its past history, and led him to collect these notes. He is aware that the result must appear but fragmentary, and that an amateur, working in the field of history and archaeology, is very liable to errors of all kinds, but he ventures to hope that, since there is no book of the kind at present in circulation, his account of the Abbey and Town may not be without interest to his old friends in Romsey and the neighbourhood, and perhaps also to some of the visitors who come to view the Church during the summer months. The Author has to express his regret that owing to lack of space he has been compelled to omit several Appendices.
