Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Civil War, 1861-1865 Although many histories have been written and tradition has furnished its part toward the perpetuation of the memory of the exciting times of the civil war, very much occurred that has never been recorded. Monuments may be erected and histories written, but unless the veterans now living get busy and refresh their memories, and the memories of their comrades very much that happened, and ought to be preserved in durable form will with the passing of the main actors pass into oblivion. The Confederate Soldiers now living are all old men, and each one could, and ought to contribute items of information that would be interesting to the children and adults of future generations. These scenes, anecdotes, incidents and historical facts ought to be written by the soldiers themselves, for by no other means can a correct history of the war period be handed down to posterity. Excerpt from Recollections of a Cavalryman of the Civil War After Fifty Years: 1861-1865 Years ago at one of the reunions of the Ninth Ohio Cavalry it was voted that I should write a history of our regiment. I was so occupied in business then that I could not find time to comply with their wishes. Now that I have had sufficient time I have carried out their request. With the help of some of my old comrades, I have undertaken to dig through the accumulated memories of fifty years and record incidents, - many of them commonplace enough to us then, but to which time has added a charm which warms our hearts to each other and to this dear land of ours. As a regiment the Ninth Ohio Cavalry, which belonged to the Army of the West, operated most of the time under general orders on its own responsibility. Often stationed quite in advance of the infantry, we were thus brought into close touch with the Southern people, and as a result dislikes on both sides were very much modified. Professional historians have written of the campaigns and battles of the Civil War. The incidents here preserved are side-lights on its dark background but they helped in a small way to modify the bitterness of it all. Excerpt from History of the Civil War: 1861-1865 This is not an abridgment of my three volumes on the Civil War but a fresh study of the subject in which I have used my work as one of many authorities. Whenever I have transferred sentences, paragraphs and pages, I have done so because, after a study of the original authorities, I found that I could give my conclusions no better than in my first work. Since writing the three volumes, published respectively in 1895, 1899 and 1904, much new original material has come to light and valuable treatments of certain periods of the Civil War have appeared. I owe especial indebtedness to the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies; Diary of Gideon Welles; Life of Rawlins, which J. H. Wilson kindly permitted me to read in manuscript before publication; the Letters and Diaries of John Hay; Miss Nicolay's Personal Traits of Lincoln; Life and Letters of General Meade; W. R. Livermore, Story of the Civil War; J. Bigelow, Jr., The Campaign of Chancellorsville; W. R. Thayer, Life of John Hay; The Reminiscences of Carl Schurz. I owe a literary revision of this volume to my son, Daniel P. Rhodes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Boys in Gray: 1861-1865 I performed no special deeds of valor, but always tried to do my duty as a soldier. I missed the battle of Jonesville, being sick with typhoid fever. While I can't claim a discharge or parole, I would do the same again under similar circumstances, and would deem it no sin to violate an oath by taking up arms again. My father gave a Republican $200 to allow me to take the oath. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Campaigns of the Civil War in the United States of America, 1861 1865 Most historians of the war recite the events chronologically, that is breaking from the campaigns of one section to describe those of another. We, however, have departed from this order, believing that a continuous account of each section will impress on the memories of the readers a clearer and more comprehensive conception of these intricate affairs. Excerpt from A Virginia Girl in the Civil War, 1861-1865: Being a Record of the Actual Experiences of the Wife of a Confederate Officer This history was told over the tea-cups. One winter, in the South, - I had for my neigh bor a gentle, little brown-haired lady, Who spent many evenings at my fireside, as I at hers, where with bits of needlework in our hands we gossiped away as women will. I discovered in her an unconscious heroine, arid her Civil War experiences made ever an in teresting topic. Wishing to share with others the reminiscences she gave me, I seek to pre sent them here in her own words. Just as they stand, they are, I believe, unique, pos sessing lat once the charm of romance and the veracity of history. They supply a graph ic, if artless, picture of the social life of one of the most interesting and dramatic periods of our national existence.
