The Fisheries and Biological Data Preparation Workshop for the Shrimp and Groundfish Fisheries of the North Brazil Shelf Large Marine Ecosystem (NBSLME) was held in Bridgetown, Barbados 23-25 October, 2018. The meeting brought together 14 participants including fisheries officers, government organizations and FAO. The main objective of the workshop was to provide training on data preparation for stock assessment purposes and fisheries status/trends monitoring, enhance capacities in fisheries data and statistics collection at the national and sub-regional levels, and review status of data collection for the shrimp and groundfish fisheries of the NBSLME. The current state of the Fisheries and Resource Monitoring System (FIRMS) stocks and fisheries inventories for the NBSLME was reviewed and updated with inputs from participants. Ongoing work on the Data Repository and Decision Support System (DSS) for the Caribbean and North Brazil Shelf Large Marine Ecosystems (CLME+) Project and its application in the NBSLME was presented and discussed. A template for recording fisheries and biological data of key species in the NBSLME for stock assessment purposes was reviewed by participants. Furthermore, for each country and fishery, participants reviewed availability of data including, inter alia, time series of landings and fishing effort, length frequencies and socio-economic information. Additionally, a review was made of the biological parameters (e.g. length-weight relationship, growth, maturity) available for key shrimp and groundfish species in the NBSLME and data gaps identified. Information on genetic studies on shrimp and groundfish species in the NBSLME region served as background for discussion on the stock structure

This techno-economic performance review of selected fishing fleets in North and South America presents the findings of four country level studies of fishing fleets in the United States of America, Brazil, Chile and Peru. The review includes financial and economic information of 21 fishing fleet segments, including shrimp and groundfish trawlers, demersal trawlers, longliners, purse seiners, dredgers as well as hook and line fishing vessels. Analysis of the costs and earnings data of these important fishing fleet segments in North and South America, using survey data from 2012 -2017 for the US fleet segments and 2018 data for the South American countries’ fleets showed that 81 percent of the fleet segments had a positive net cash flow. The net profit margins of 38 percent of the 21 fishing fleet segments were >10%. Two-thirds (67%) of the fleet segments presented positive results in terms of their capital productivity as the return on fixed tangible assets (ROFTA) was positive. Twenty four percent of the fleet segments showed return on investment (ROI) figures of twenty percent or more. A majority of the Chilean and Peruvian fleet segments had ROIs of ten percent or higher in 2018. The financial and economic performance of the fishing fleet segments is not only affected by the seafood prices, but also by the fisheries management regime in place, fish species targeted, fish stock status and fishing methods and technologies applied. The age structure of the fishing vessels shows an increasing trend for most of the fishing fleet segments in this review, which adds to the apparent profitability of the vessels in these fleet segments as depreciation and interests on loans are minimized.

In 2011, the Twenty-ninth Session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) recommended the development of international guidelines in support of sustainable small-scale fisheries (SSFs) as a complement to the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. Work has started to raise the technological and investment readiness levels (TRLs and IRLs) of these prospective industries drawing on the experience of established maritime industries such as Offshore Oil and Gas; Shipping; Fisheries and Tourism. An accord has to be struck between policy makers and regulators on the one hand, anxious to direct research and business incentives in effective and efficient directions, and developers, investors and businesses on the other, anxious to reduce the risks of such potentially profitable but innovative investments.The EU H2020 MARIBE (Marine Investment for the Blue Economy) funded project was designed to identify the key technical and non-technical challenges facing maritime industries and to place them into the social and economic context of the coastal and ocean economy. MARIBE went on to examine with companies, real projects for the combination of marine industry sectors into multi-use platforms (MUPs).
