Forests are valuable in our daily lives, crucial to our nation's ecomony, and integral to the long-term health of the environment. Yet, forestry research has been critically underfunded, and the data generated under current research programs is not enough to meet the diverse needs of our society. Forestry Research provides a research agenda that should yield the information we need to develop responsible policies for forest use and management. In this consensus of forestry experts, the volume explores: The diverse and competing concerns of the timber industry, recreational interests, and wildlife and environmental organizations. The gap between our need for information and the current output of the forestry research program. Areas of research requiring attention: biology of forest organisms, ecosystem function and management, human-forest interactions, wood as raw material, and international trade and competition. Forestry Research is an important book of special interest to federal and state policymakers involved in forestry issues, research managers, researchers, faculty, and students in the field.

Common Sense Forestry relates thirty years' experience of an environmentally conscious woodland owner. Much of the book is devoted to starting a forest and how to maintain it. It answers such questions as: What seedlings to buy? Should your forest be monoculture or a mixed forest? What is the payback for planting and maintaining a forest? Is seeding a good way to start a forest? What kind of seeds work best? Does it pay to hire a consultant? What should he/she do for you? Does it pay to do much maintenance in your forest? How should I prune? Is timberland improvement worthwhile? How, when and whether to thin? How to herbicide and when? Can the damage done to nature by chemicals be justified by the benefits to your seedlings? What are the economics of woodland ownership? The success and history of German forestry methods is discussed and suggests what can be learned from these age-old practices. It will tell you how to file your income taxes, what equipment to buy, what works--and does not work--and why. It also provides guidance on how to deal with state and federal programs. Although intended for private woodland owners, the book is used as a classroom text in universities. The book is more practical than technical, yet still imparts knowledge of basic forestry, explaining terms such as succession and shade tolerance and how to apply these concepts in practice. Even sophisticated concepts are covered in plain, non-technical terms. Hans Morsbach, the author, believes that forestry is an art more than a science. Competent foresters may apply different methods of managing their forests and achieve comparable results. Still, it is important to be guided by natural forest principles. Doing nothing may sometimes be a better course of action than doing too much. The book suggests ways to gauge your involvement with your woodland to time available and your personal preference. It is most important that you enjoy your forest.

Excerpt from Report of the State Board of Forestry: For 1906 and 1907 The Maryland State Board of Forestry was created by the Legislature of 1906 under an act, ' To establish a State Board of Forestry, and to promote forest interests and arboriculture in the State. The board was organized in May, 1906, and has since been actively engaged in promoting an interest in forestry, and in ascertaining the forest condi tions and needs of the State. The first forest work under State initiative was done in 1900 by the Maryland Geological Survey in cooperation with the United States Forestry Bureau, when a study of the forest conditions in Allegany County was made, and a report published. This was in the nature of an economic survey, to ascertain the relation which the forests bear to other natural resources of the State, their value, and means of im provement. The study of Allegany County was followed by similar work in Cecil, Calvert, Garrett and St. Mary's Counties, the results of which have already been published; investigations were also taken up in Worcester, Kent and Harford Counties, a map of the first county showing the forest growth by commercial types, having been issued. These reports supplied accurate information on the forest conditions and needs of the counties, and furnished an intelligent basis for gen eral legislation. As a result of these forest studies it became apparent that the importance of the work and its special needs required a sepa rate State department to properly handle it. This led to the introduc tion of the Forestry Bill in the last Legislature, and its prompt enact ment into law. Since July, 1906, all of the State forest work has been conducted by the State Board of Forestry, through a State Forester, who is directly responsible to the Board for his official acts. The main lines of activity of the Board of Forestry are briefly set forth under the following headings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
