Before undertaking research on transpiration, it was necessary to develop and put into operation several scientific instruments. During the first year of research a high light - intensity plant growth room, coz and H00 mixing and monitoring systems, leaf chambers, stomata cam era, and an instrument for measuring light quality were developed at the Southern Piedmont Soil Conservation Field Station.
