Winner of the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies 2015 F. W. Beare Award Did Paul have formal training in Greco-Roman rhetoric, or did he learn what he knew of persuasion informally, as social practice? Pauline scholars recognize the importance of this question both for determining Paul’s social status and for conceptualizing the nature of his letters, but they have been unable to reach a consensus. Using 2 Corinthians 10–13 as a test case, Ryan Schellenberg undertakes a set of comparisons with non-Western speakers—most compellingly, the Seneca orator Red Jacket—to demonstrate that the rhetorical strategies Paul employs in this text are also attested in speakers known to have had no formal training in Greco-Roman rhetoric. Since there are no specific indicators of formal training in the way Paul uses these strategies, their appearance in his letters does not constitute evidence that Paul received formal rhetorical education.

Paul and Rhetoric contains essays presented in a seminar called "Paul and Rhetoric" in the annual meetings of the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas, the leading international forum for New Testament and Christian Origin scholars. Is Paul being ironic when he thanks God for the Corinthians in 1 Cor 1:4–9? On one hand, the apostle seems sincere as he gives thanks for God’s gifting of the church. On the other hand, it can be hard to trust Paul’s sincerity when the very things mentioned (e.g., “speech” and “knowledge”) will later be associated with Paul’s rebuke of the church. This book clarifies the apostle’s intent. A look at rhetorical ornamentation from Paul’s world reveals that he is using one of the most popular rhetorical figures of his day, called emphasis. The figure allows Paul to give thanks genuinely while implicitly chiding his audience through various hints. These hints prepare for every major section of the letter and the rebukes contained within them. Intriguingly, the only two comparable thanksgivings in the letter (1:14–16; 14:18–19) also employ emphasis. These passages all reveal a subtlety that is at once sincere, critical, and even humorous.
