Excerpt from Revision of the Pelycosauria of North America The vertebrate fauna of the Permian beds of North America was made known as early as 1877-78, and quickly attracted the attention of Professor Cope, who, with his wonderful acumen, saw the importance of the fauna lying so close to the beginnings of the reptilian line. From the first discovery of Permian reptiles until his death he retained his interest in the group, some of his latest papers having to do with the orders Cotylosanria and Chelydosauria. Much of the material in the collections of Professor Cope is in a very fragmentary condition, and none of it was carefully prepared while in his possession. He contented himself with the description of new forms without detailed study or complete morphological discussion, and yet he based upon this material many of his most brilliant generalizations; and it is more surprising that he should have seen so much and built so well than that he described some genera and species that will not stand and drew some conclusions that have proven incorrect. From the discovery of Permian vertebrates in Texas until his death. Cope sent parties into the field at irregular intervals, and the material collected by them is now preserved in the American Museum of Natural History in New York. These collections contain the types from Texas described by Cope. A small collection made in Vermilion county, Illinois, by Mr. William Gurley, and now in the Walker Museum of the University of Chicago, contains the types from Illinois described by Cope. Another small collection obtained from New Mexico by Professor Marsh is preserved in the Museum of Yale University. The author made two collections in Texas for the University of Chicago in 1895 and 1903;these are preserved in the Walker Museum and contain the specimens upon which was based the work of the late Doctor Baur and the author. Excerpt from A Revision of the Cotylosauria of North America In this place, I desire to express my thanks to the Carnegie Institution of Washington for its continued support. To the authorities of the American Museum of Natural History in New York I am greatly indebted for their kindness in permitting me to study the type material there preserved and to publish illustrations and descriptions of their material. Especially am I under obligation to President H. F. Osborn and to Dr. W. D. Matthew for advice and assistance in the work. Both Dr. S. W. Williston, of the University of Chicago, and Dr. Richard Broom, of Springs, South Africa, have been of great assistance to me in the preparation of the manuscript. Excerpt from Revision of the North American, Species of Xanthium, Vol. 4 The monographic study of the genus Xanthium is involved. In difficulties not only as to bibliography but also as to Species concept. Thanks to the kind and hearty co-operation of various botanists, we have been able to settle very satisfactorily the numerous matters of bibliography. The species concept in Xanthium, however, must long remain a perplexing problem. In temperate regions, the plants do not mature their fruits sufficiently for exact determination until after frost comes and the majority of collecting botanists have ceased their field-work. This renders good material in herbaria scanty in quantity and inadequate in quality. Some of the Species are known to exhibit most striking variations in fruiting characters, variations that with many botanists would be taken to represent varieties or subspecies. In fact, several of the more pronounced of these forms have been made the basis of new species by certain authors, notably Greene X. Acutum, X. Afiine, X. Cahform'cum, X. Glandulifemm). In the present monograph the writers have endeavored to be neither hasty in the proposal of new Specific names nor radical in the reduction of old names to synonomy. The taxonomic treatment has been made to accord as strictly as possible with the Observed data. We have retained several of the less well known species (e. G., X. Acerosum, X. Cylindricum, X. Globosum, species that with some botanists might be reduced to varietal or subspecific rank), because 'we have felt that only after fur ther field Observations and breeding tests can satisfactory conclusions as to their true status be reached. Excerpt from Revision of the North American Species of the Genus Juncus It was thought best to add a second table, giving the extremes of every month and every year in those seven years, as the extremes are of more practical importance for the boatmen, as well as the inhabitants of the banks, than the means. The table shows that from September to February the river has never been higher than 17 feet, from March to July never lower than 6 feet, and in April, May, and June never lower than 8 feet above low water mark. The lowest stage, zero, was observed on December 21, 1863, and the highest, feet, on July 27, 1844. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Revision of the North American Species of the Genus Lithocolletis Hubner To Dr. Edward Meyrick of Marlborough, England, to whose consideration the proposed division of the genus was submitted, I am indebted for the expression of his opinion on the establishment of the subgenera, ' and also for the comparison of several American species with closely related European ones. Through the kindness of Dr. Henry Skinner of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, and Prof. Samuel Henshaw of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Cambridge, Mass, I was given every opportunity to examine and sketch the many valuable types of species of this genus. Dr. James Fletcher has sent me a number of Canadian species for examination, for which privilege I return thanks. Excerpt from The Pselaphidae of North America The surface is marked by fine lines of growth. The largest specimen which was secured has the following dimensions: length, mm.; width, i.s mm.; height, mm. The average dimensions are: length, mm.; Width, mm.; height, mm. The radula is rather narrow, the dental for mula being 12 - 1 - 12. A rachidian tooth and one of the inner most laterals will be figured on a plate in our next bulletin. The animal is of a uniform bluish-white color; the foot is ovate, wider anteriorly, and rather narrow for an Ancylus. This species occurs, not uncommonly, about five miles east of Lincoln, Neb., in Dead Man's Run, a streamlet with numerous pond-like enlargements. Specimens were found by the author at all seasons of the year, adhering to shells of Anodonta plana, sticks, leaves, etc. Though diligent search has been made, no specimens have thus far been found in any other than the above-mentioned locality.
