Mills began his work of urging the establishment of the national reservation. While the vast tumbled massing of mountains in Colorado became a notable landmark for the early explorers, that magnificently scenic grouping which is now the Rocky Mountain National Park became known only in later years. The reason was that, while it fronts immediately the great eastern plains, it lay apart from and between the natural passes across the Rockies. The first historical reference to this section is found in the records of the explorations of Lieut. Pike, for whom Pikes Peak was named. Scanning the snow-topped mountain barrier from the plains in November, 1806, Pike singled out its most commanding height and called it Great Peak; but he entered the mountains many miles south. Excerpt from Peneplains of the Front Range and Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado Later Davis3 accepted Ball's description and applied to the high lands the term a two-cycle mountain mass. This term and other expressions in his paper indicate that Davis believes that only two main cycles of erosion are represented in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado - an older one resulting in the formation of a peneplain and a younger one during which the canyons and cirques were excavated. Hence the remnants of the highland plain found at many places in these mountains are referred to as parts of the peneplain. A possible third cycle. The dissected plateau near Pikes Peak which Cross described as practically the same as the floor of South Park was recognized by Richardson 4 in the Castle Rock quadrangle and by Finlay 5 in the Colorado Springs quadrangle. This plateau lies at altitudes between and feet and is extensively developed in the Front Range in Colorado. From localities at some distance from the mountains this plain appears to be an almost horizontal shelf that extends along the mountain front as far as the eye can reach. The area in which it is best developed and best preserved extends from Denver south ward to Pikes Peak. In areas farther north, such as the moun tains west of Golden, it is not so readily recognized, but it seems to be represented by surfaces much lower than the highland plain described by Ball as lying above feet. Remnants of the lower plain may be recognized from some commanding eminence, such as Mount Lookout, near Golden, Colo., whose summit appears to be a part of the lower peneplain. This plain has become known somewhat widely as the Rocky Mountain peneplain, possibly because it is the most extensive land form in the Front Range. From Mount Lookout may be seen at nearly the same level numerous flat tops, benches, and smooth-floored reentrants (see B]. I), which are rem nants of the Rocky Mountain peneplain. But the best-known view of this peneplain is that which may be had from the side of Pikes Peak at an altitude of about feet. From this point the oh server looks to the north and west over the tops of the mountain ridges as over a level plain. For many years the high, rolling plateau from which rises the majestic Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado has been the resort of increasing summer thousands, but few, indeed, ventured into the fastnesses of the mountains. When plateau and mountains both became the Rocky Mountain National Park in 1915, the popularity of the neighborhood increased with extraordinary rapidity; the normal attendance of in 1915 became in 1916 and in 1917. Attention became centered upon the snowy mountains which Congress dignified as typical of the Rockies' noblest heights, and the desire to enter them began to possess those who had been content to View them from the plains; thousands of new visitors were attracted by their sudden fame. Mountaineering of the kind which is enjoyable to the unac customed has become popular. Increasing thousands yearly are now tasting of a new joy and yet one which is as old as man. Fortunately there existed, to meet this new need, a few men and women to whom these mountains were old and familiar friends. Fortunately these men and women, proselyters of nature, were' inspired to bring all men and women into the fellowship of the wild. This book is a compilation of experiences of the Colorado Mountain Club which cover many years of climbing these very mountains. Its purpose is to offset in some measure the many years of inexperience of those who come new to the mountains. Excerpt from Plants of Rocky Mountain National Park The wild flowers of Rocky Mountain National Park are one of its main attractions. They paint its fields, meadows, hillsides, and rocky gorges in all the colors of the rainbow. There has been a con stant demand for an illustrated guide to these flowers, and this publica tion has been prepared in response to that demand. It is the result of several years' study of the plants of the region. Emphasis has been put on the outstanding field characters of the plants described and on their habitats. Keys for identification and an illustrated glossary are included. The chapter on Mountain Plants at Home deals with the relations between the plants and their severe mountain environ ment and their adaptations to that environment. The keys have been made as practical and simple as possible. They have been previously published, tested, and revised, and the writer feels that they will be useful to all persons who are seriously interested in the identification of our common wild flowers, whether or not they have had training in botany. In order to keep the keys from being long and unwieldy, some of the inconspicuous plants are not included. However, the names of all seed plants and ferns known to grow in the park are given in the text. Technical terms have been avoided as much as possible, but because it is impossible to differentiate between related plants by using only every-day English, a few technical terms have been employed to assure accuracy. These are adequately explained by drawings and definitions in the glossary. Approximately 700 species are included. Specimens of most of these have been collected by the writer and are in the herbarium of the Rocky Mountain National Park. Most of the collecting has been done on the eastern side of the Continental Divide, and it is probable that some plants not included herein will be found on the western slope. A thorough study of the grass and sedge families has not been attempted, but lists of those species known to occur have been in cluded. The region that has been intensively studied is that of the Rocky Mountain National Park and the territory surrounding Estes Park, but this book will be found useful above feet throughout the mountains of northern Colorado and southern Wyoming. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plants of Rocky Mountain National Park The wild flowers of Rocky Mountain National Park are one of its main attractions. They paint its fields, meadows, hillsides, and rocky gorges in all the colors of the rainbow. There has been a con stant demand for an illustrated guide to these flowers, and this publica tion has been prepared in response to that demand. It is the result of several years' study of the plants of the region. Emphasis has been put on the outstanding field characters of the plants described and on their habitats. Keys for identification and an illustrated glossary are included. The chapter on Mountain Plants at Home deals with the relations between the plants and their severe mountain environ ment and their adaptations to that environment. The keys have been made as practical and simple as possible. They have been previously published, tested, and revised, and the writer feels that they will be useful to all persons who are seriously interested in the identification of our common wild flowers, whether or not they have had training in botany. In order to keep the keys from being long and unwieldy, some of the inconspicuous plants are not included. However, the names of all seed plants and ferns known to grow in the park are given in the text. Technical terms have been avoided as much as possible, but because it is impossible to differentiate between related plants by using only every-day English, a few technical terms have been employed to assure accuracy. These are adequately explained by drawings and definitions in the glossary. Approximately 700 species are included. Specimens of most of these have been collected by the writer and are in the herbarium of the Rocky Mountain National Park. Most of the collecting has been done on the eastern side of the Continental Divide, and it is probable that some plants not included herein will be found on the western slope. A thorough study of the grass and sedge families has not been attempted, but lists of those species known to occur have been in cluded. The region that has been intensively studied is that of the Rocky Mountain National Park and the territory surrounding Estes Park, but this book will be found useful above feet throughout the mountains of northern Colorado and southern Wyoming.
