The Bright Survivor is a memoir offered in a unique second-person, mother-to-son approach. The mother provides a detailed story about how her son grew up in a small family of the first-generation immigrants in Canada. Her son was born in Toronto when she and her husband were in their forties, finishing school and starting a new career. When they immigrated to Canada after his birth, the immigration officer asked them to “make sure that he gets all that a Canadian deserves.” It took twenty years. The family of three explored and overcame several learning curves. For many years, being with his parents was rare for the boy because his parents always worked full-time. He grew up with Chinese nannies, home cares, after-school programs, and extra-curricular lessons. For summer and winter breaks, he was busy with camps and sometimes family trips. In his primary school years, the boy was fine but had little patience in group settings and split-grade classes. His parents pursued a better fit for his education. He eventually felt in the right place with the International Baccalaureate program at high school and went to a co-op program for his college education to become an engineer. His mother wondered sometimes if the home she had provided could have been more relaxing and better appreciated. Her generation never had the time or resources. Her version of his childhood is marked by persistent effort in a diverse world, always with an open mind and often with love and happiness.

This report of the proceedings of a symposium held in conjunction with the release of the IOM report, From Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor: Lost in Transition, represents an effort on the part of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS), and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to further disseminate the findings and recommendations of the IOM report and to take the next step toward implementation of those recommendations. The symposium and this report serve as important vehicles to raise awareness, fill gaps that have existed in cancer patients' long-term care, and chart a course for quality care for cancer survivors and their families. More than 100 stakeholders in the cancer community, including survivors, advocates, healthcare providers, government officials, insurers and payers, and researchers participated in the symposium. This report culminates a series of work at the IOM focused on cancer survivorship. The idea to embark on a major study of cancer survivorship within the National Academies originated with the National Cancer Policy Board (NCPB). The NCPB was established in 1997 in the IOM and the National Research Council's Division of Earth and Life Studies at the request of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Institutes of Health, and the President's Cancer Panel. The NCPB identified emerging policy issues in the nation's effort to combat cancer, and prepared reports that address those issues, including a series of reports on topics ranging from cancer prevention to end-of-life care.

Hodgkin's disease, sometimes called Hodgkin's lymphoma, is a cancer that starts in lymphatic tissue. Lymphatic tissue includes the lymph nodes and related organs that are part of the body's immune and blood-forming systems. The lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped organs found underneath the skin in the neck, underarm, and groin. They are also found in many other places in the body such as inside the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. Lymph nodes make and store infection-fighting white blood cells, called lymphocytes. They are connected throughout the body by lymph vessels (narrow tubes similar to blood vessels). These lymph vessels carry a colourless, watery fluid (lymphatic fluid) that contains lymphocytes. Eventually the lymphatic fluid is emptied into the blood vessels in the left upper chest. There are 5 different types of Hodgkin's lymphoma: Nodular sclerosing Hodgkin's lymphoma; Mixed cellularity Hodgkin's lymphoma; Lymphocyte depletion Hodgkin's lymphoma; Lymphocyte-rich classical Hodgkin's lymphoma; Nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin's lymphoma.
