In its preparation free use has been made of whatever literature could be found relating to the subject, and references for further investigation are given in foot-notes throughout the work. Most of the data, however, have been collected by the writer, who desires to acknowledge his indebtedness to those who have assisted in the work by furnishing information and drawings. Especially to be mentioned are Mr. C. W. Hunt, the well-known authority upon this subject; and Mr. Spencer Miller, long identi ed with the practice of rope transmission.
