“I have endeavoured to give a presentation which is readable by the beginner in the field and also will be useful to those who do or want to do research work in this field. In order to assist the former, I have frequently made use of small type for those sections that are not necessary for an understanding of the fundamentals. For the benefit of those working in the field, numerous references to original papers have been included. “A satisfactory presentation of molecular spectra and molecular structure is nowadays not possible without treating thoroughly, apart from the empirical results, the theoretical background also. Therefore, I have included as much of the theory of molecular spectra as is possible without going into the more difficult mathematical details. A large number of diagrams, graphical representations of eigenfunctions and potential curves, as well as energy level diagrams, serve to illustrate and to explain the theory. On the other hand, I have added numerous carefully selected spectrograms of bands and band systems (some of which have been taken specially for this purpose) in order to give an accurate idea of the experimental material that forms the basis of the developments.

Perturbations in the Spectra of Diatomic Molecules examines in sufficient detail the spectrum of every diatomic molecule. This book is divided into seven chapters. Chapter 1 describes the perturbations and simple procedures for evaluating matrix elements of angular momentum. The terms in the molecular Hamiltonian that are responsible for perturbations are elaborated in Chapter 2, while the process of reducing spectra to molecular constants and the difficulty of relating empirical parameters to terms in the exact molecular Hamiltonian are described in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 discusses the magnitudes and physical interpretations of matrix elements. The transition intensities, especially quantum mechanical interference effects, are reviewed in Chapter 5. The last two chapters are devoted to the two forms of perturbation—predissociation and autoionization. This publication is a good source for graduate students, theorists, experimentalists, and potential users of spectroscopic data.

...Diatomic Molecules provides a systematic approach to quantitative analysis of molecular spectra of diatomic molecules, in particular infrared and Raman spectra. This analysis is used to extract precise information about not only molecular structure but also its associated electric and magnetic properties. This book is unique in its methodical treatment of the subject, and in the included collection of results and extensive bibliography. The first three chapters provide a thorough explanation of an empirical basis of infrared and Raman spectra, together with the theory behind techniques employed in their analysis. Succeeding chapters outline, among other topics, wave functions and matrix elements in relation to radial functions for potential energy, dipolar moment etc., and applications of lasers. Various methods are applied in analysis of frequency data and spectral intensities, and to effects of spin and intermolecular interaction. The many subjects are discussed in depth, with reviews of topics important in future progress of experiment and theory in molecular spectroscopy. Senior undergraduate and postgraduate students in chemistry and physics will find ..Diatomic Molecules a useful adjunct to their course texts, and it will prove invaluable to all researchers in spectroscopy.
