(Banjo). The Round Peak area of Surry County, North Carolina consists of a number of small communities which border Mt. Airy, NC. The Round Peak musical style is synonymous with the old time music pairing of the fiddle with the African-derived banjo and was considered to be the defining ensemble sound for community dance music as played by the holy trinity of the Round Peak banjo masters: Kyle Creed, Fred Cockerham, and Tommy Jarrell. As most of the Round Peak repertoire is played in the traditional fiddle keys of D Major and A Major, they are the keys that are used in the arrangements of some of the traditional Appalachian fiddle tunes that form its living tradition. During that decade, the mandolin became a featured solo instrument requiring players to quickly develop a new style of playing in order to give vocalists a break from singing, particularly in the popular "brother act" format. As the decade progressed, numerous idiomatic techniques were tested, discarded and refined leading to instrumental solos that were eventually based more on playing over chord changes than on the actual melody itself. The techniques outlined here, based on period recoridngs, clearly establish the roots of that new solo approach which blossomed in the looser ensemble format of early 1940s "bluegrass" music.

The original down picking style didn't entirely die out, because throughout the reaminder of the 19th Century, new methods for the banjo often included a number of songs in the older two-finger banjo style of performance. Perhaps the most intricate set of songs to appear in the "original" banjo style were these 34 progressive pieces found in Frank B. Converse's Analytical Banjo Method from 1887. Those songs, presented in this book for clawhammer banjo, offer a nice mix of banjo characteristic pieces, medleys and new compositions from Converse.
