If Dexter and Faith (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) had a daughter and raised her in the land of Santa Clarita Diet....she'd be Clare Bleecker. The small town of Pickman Flats offers a bright sunny place filled with quaint shopping and wine tasting. But underneath the town's inviting exterior lies a dark underbelly, a sinister element that lurks in the shadows. Clare is a devoted vegan who goes to Catholic high school, is fastidious in her manner, and also, well, a serial killer. The Other Clare takes over at the most inopportune of times. She tries to keep her inner beast's lust for blood at bay, but it's hard when there are so many creeps around who help to unleash it. What secret lies hidden beneath Pickman Flats? And who is Clare really? If you want answers, well, there's only one way to find out - even if it kills you. Slay Responsibly, XOXO Clare hr “A stylish, cool, ratatattat machine gun prose that blazes from all chambers -- it's like an unholy union of Heathers and Dexter. Clare Bleecker is an unforgettable, dangerous voice.” -- Tom Holland, writer-director of Fright Night and Child's Play “Clare at Sixteen is a terrifying triumph! What Don Roff has done with this highly personal and deeply disturbing novel is deliver one of the most memorable and ultimately sympathetic serial killers since Robert Bloch conceived of Norman Bates. This bloody and brilliant book, as well as its complex main character, will haunt readers long after their final prayers of the night. BRAVO!" -- Mark Pavia, Writer/Director of Stephen King's The Night Flier "Reminiscent of Heathers, Clare at Sixteen is a delightfully dark teen horror comedy with a dauntless and snarky heroine who serves up her own unique brand of small town justice along with some killer vegan smoothie recipes." --S.G. Browne, author of Breathers and Less Than Hero hr

A remarkable and thought-provoking new novel set on Israel’s West Bank, by the author of The Breadwinner. On Israel’s West Bank, a cat sneaks into a small Palestinian house that has just been commandeered by two Israeli soldiers. The house seems empty, until the cat realizes that a little boy is hiding beneath the floorboards. Should she help him? After all, she’s just a cat. Or is she? It turns out that this particular cat is not used to thinking about anyone but herself. She was once a regular North American girl who only had to deal with normal middle-school problems — staying under the teachers’ radar, bullying her sister and the uncool kids at school, outsmarting her clueless parents. But that was before she died and came back to life as a cat, in a place with a whole different set of rules for survival. When the little boy is discovered, the soldiers don’t know what to do with him. Where are the child’s parents? Why has he been left alone in the house? It is not long before his teacher and classmates come looking for him, and the house is suddenly surrounded by Palestinian villagers throwing rocks, and the sound of Israeli tanks approaching. Not my business, thinks the cat. And then she sees a photograph, and suddenly she understands what happened to the boy’s parents, and why they have not returned. And as the soldiers begin to panic, and disaster seems certain, she knows that it is up to her to diffuse the situation. But what can a cat do? What can any one creature do? Notwithstanding the wealth of material published about St Clare of Assisi (1193-1253) in the context of medieval scholarship, and the wealth of visual material regarding her, there is a dearth of published scholarship concerning her cult in the early modern period. This work examines the representations of St Clare in the Italian visual tradition from the thirteenth century on, but especially between the fifteenth and the mid-seventeenth centuries, in the context of mendicant activity. Through an examination of such diverse visual images as prints, drawings, panels, sculptures, minor arts, and frescoes in relation to sermons of Franciscan preachers, starting in the thirteenth century but focusing primarily on the later tradition of early modernity, the book highlights the cult of women saints and its role in the reform movements of the Osservanza and the Catholic Reformation and in the face of Muslim-Christian encounter of the early modern era. Debby?s analyses of the preaching of the times and iconographic examination of neglected artistic sources makes the book a significant contribution to research in art history, sermon studies, gender studies, and theology.

She embraced radical poverty. Led the first female followers of Saint Francis. Advised popes. Lived in deepest intimacy with Christ. The story of Saint Clare of Assisi has been told many times. But never like this. Madeline Nugent masterfully crafts years of research into a compelling biography that reads like a novel. She grounds her work in primary and modern sources, time spent in Assisi, and interviews with Franciscan experts, painting a vivid picture of the world of Saint Clare through the eyes of those who knew her best—and through the words of Clare herself.

The New York Times–bestselling author of Cleo “reprises her first book’s theme: cats have the power to help heal human suffering” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). Some say your previous cat chooses your new feline. If so, what in cat heaven’s name was our beloved Cleo thinking when she sent us a crazy cat like Jonah? Helen Brown swore she’d never get another cat after her precious Cleo died. But that was before a cute Siamese with an intense blue gaze wrapped her around his paw. Demonstrating the grace of a trapeze artist—and a talent for smashing anything breakable—Jonah seduced the household with his daredevil antics and heart-melting purr. With her son getting married, her daughter setting off on a potentially dangerous personal quest, and a recent brush with her own mortality, Helen faced a whirlwind of joys and challenges. Yet Jonah proved just the thing to ease the busy household’s growing pains. Uplifting, witty, and wise, here is a story of love and family—four-legged members included. Don’t Miss Helen Brown’s Beloved Bestseller, Cleo “A remarkable memoir . . . I realized that Helen Brown didn’t break my heart at all—she opened it.” —Beth Hoffman, New York Times–bestselling author “The next Marley & Me. Even non-cat-lovers will be moved.” —Good Housekeeping “A buoyant tale, heartfelt and open.” —Booklist “An absolute must.” —Cat World
