Excerpt from Sam Slick the Clockmaker: His Sayings and Doings Homas chandler haliburton, whom Artemus Ward described as the founder of the American school of humour, was by birth and sympathies no Yankee, but a loyal British colonist. He was born in 1796, at Windsor, Nova Scotia, being the son Of a Justice Of the Court Of Common Pleas. He was educated at King's College in that town, and in 1820 was called to the Bar, speedily creating a large and prosperous business in Annapolis Royal, the old capital, as member for which he entered the Legislative Assembly. From the year 1828 to 1840 he held the office of Chief Justice Of the Court of Common Pleas, and then became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, a position which he resigned in 1856, leaving Nova Scotia for England, where he spent the remainder Of his days. He died in 1865, having in the meanwhile represented Launceston for six years in the Conservative interest.
