The largest county in the continental United States has seen its share of colorful pursuits of suspects and fugitives, including the search for the last Native American in the United States to be tracked to his tragic end by a lawman's posse: "Willie Boy" at Ruby Mountain. San Bernardino County also was the setting for the shoot-outs at Baldy Mesa and Lytle Creek. Yet gunplay lore is only one aspect of the epic of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. Today the department deploys nearly 5,000 salaried and volunteer employees to protect and serve its 20,186 square miles of deserts, mountains, forests, and increasingly urban areas. This original cow-county sheriff's office went through many developments that are detailed in these vintage photographs-sheriffs' administrations, equipment, investigations, and other exploits-all culled from the department's archives, private collections, the California Room of the San Bernardino Public Library, and the San Bernardino Pioneer Historical Society.

When I came home from Vietnam in 1970, I had no idea what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. A chance encounter with the Marshal of San Bernardino County led to my being hired as a deputy for the San Bernardino County, California Sheriff's Department. Thus began a 22-year career helping to police the largest county in the contiguous 48 states. At over 20,000 square miles, San Bernardino County could hold the states of Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey and Rhode Island within its borders with room to spare. It is larger than the entire country of Switzerland. During my career, I served as a jail deputy, patrol deputy, and as a helicopter observer with the sheriff's aviation division. As a member of the West End Search and Rescue Team, I participated in the search for singer Frank Sinatra's mother when she was killed in a plane crash on San Gorgonio Mountain. I worked as a detective, field training officer, correctional training officer and shift supervisor until I was injured while serving a search warrant and had to retire. It was an interesting and rewarding career in which I met many colorful characters, such as actors Steve McQueen and James Garner. I had the opportunity to meet Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan before my career ended. During my time with the sheriff's department, I helped bring the department from an 'old west' style of law enforcement into the modern age of helicopter patrols, computer-aided dispatching and computers in patrol cars. I hope you will join me on this adventure of a lifetime

California's Megan's Law allows law enforcement to notify the public of serious and high-risk sex offenders who reside in, are employed in, or visit a community. The law requires the California Dept. of Justice to produce a CD-ROM or other electronic medium containing information on serious and high-risk sex offenders. Access to the CD-ROM is mandated to be available to the public at all sheriff's departments and police departments in cities with a population of 200,000 or more as well as through the California Dept. of Justice. Many police departments with smaller jurisdictions have also voluntarily elected to make the CD-ROM available to the public. This report covers 1998 and 1999.
