DOMESTIC ABUSE has a devastating impact on its victims and the children who witness it. It exists in every community, causing significant long-term emotional and physical harm and creating a ripple effect that negatively impacts our neighborhoods, schools, churches, legal system, healthcare, the workplace--in fact, all members of our society.For 35 years, Family Shelter Service has been helping families heal from the effects of domestic abuse. The staff and volunteers have witnessed both struggle and success as day by day, these survivors create safe futures free of oppression and control. Until now, few outside of Family Shelter have heard their stories.In 2011, a group of staff members and community supporters met to develop a safe way to change that. The result, named Our Story Project, now helps survivors to find their own voices through writing of their experiences. Two benefits have emerged: the writers find relief and affirmation through this expression, and the larger community gains a deeper understanding of domestic abuse and what it takes to move beyond it. Our writers' words, paired with art from Family Shelter Service's long-standing Art Expression Group, invite all to step inside their experience for a moment, to learn and to honor their courage and resilience.
