Excerpt from The Scottish Mountaineering Club Journal, 1891 Although the value of a Club Journal as a means of circulating information must be so apparent to members as to render editorial introduction almost unnecessary, it may not be out of place, in this the first number, to indicate briefly one or two points in connection with it. Probably it will surprise many readers to learn that there are more than three hundred mountains in Scotland whose height exceeds feet above sea-level! Even were our explorations to be restricted to mountains of no lesser altitude, here truly is a formidable undertaking. Their very names might furnish us with philological study for considerable time to come, without trenching upon the more scientific aspects of their botany, zoology, and climatology; and even if we content ourselves with them from a topographical or a climbing point, it will be long indeed before they are exhausted. But fine walks, hard climbs, and magnificent scenery are by no means restricted to the higher mountains. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.

Excerpt from The Scottish Mountaineering Club Journal, 1897, Vol. 4 They exhibit very little variety, being almost wholly covered with dark heath, and even that seems to be checked in its growth. What is not heath is nakedness, a little diversified by now and then a stream rushing down the steep. An eye accustomed to flowery pastures and waving harvests is astonished and repelled by this wide extent Of hopeless sterility. T be appearance is t/zat of matter in capable of form or usefulness, dismissed by Nature from her care, and disinherited of her favours, left in its original elemental state, or quickened only with one sullen power of useless vegetation. The idea of Suilven and other mountains of the west being incapable of form is exquisite and the holding up of flowery pastures and waving harvests as the only kind of scenery to be admired, presents an exact parallel to the sentiment of my friend, the West Highland sea captain. Quoted in my first address as President, who could under stand people admiring the beauty of Greenock or Gourock. With their trim villas and straight paths, but could see nothing to admire on Loch Pyne - where there was nothing but rocks and woods, and the like 0' that. Excerpt from The Scottish Mountaineering Club Journal What a luxury it is to the climber to have had his chosen centre explored, so that every gully is known by number, letter, or name, and described so minutely that, as has been sarcastically remarked, he knows with which foot to start from the hotel. In his rucksack is a list of climbs in their order of difficulty and danger if he be ambitious, he needs waste no time on those enjoyable ascents which are the scorn of the scorner; by careful selection he may also avoid the risk of defeat. Luxuries pall with use, however, and for a change the uncertainties attendant on climbing unfrequented crags may afl'ord keener enjoyment.
