In this exciting rendition of the renowned classic, Krishna Dharma retells this epic as a fast-paced novel, but fully retains the majestic mood of the original. As the divinely beautiful Draupadi rose from the fire, a voice rang out from the heavens foretelling a terrible destiny. “She will cause the destruction of countless warriors.” And so begins one of the most fabulous stories of all time. Mahabharata plunges readers into a wondrous and ancient world of romance and adventure. A powerful and moving tale, it recounts the history of the five heroic Pandava brothers and their celestial wife. Cheated of their kingdom and sent into exile by their envious cousins, they set off on a fascinating journey on which they encounter mystical sages, mighty kings, and a host of gods and demons. Profound spiritual themes underlie the enthralling narrative, making it one of the world’s most revered texts. Culminating in an apocalyptic war, Mahabharata is a masterpiece of suspense, intrigue, and illuminating wisdom.

Excerpt from Selections From the Mahabharata Hindus. Subsequently to the transactions there described, the practices of the sons of Duarraaisurna against the lives of the Pandavas become still more malevolent; and they privily set tire to the house in which Parrtui and her sons reside. As the Pandavas had been warned of the intention of their enemies, they eluded it, and escaped by a subterranean passage, leaving it to be reported and believed that they had perished in the mates of their dwelling. They secrete themselves in the forests, and adopt the garb and mode of life of Brahmans. It is during this period that they hear of the Swayambara, ' a rite familiar to the readers of nala, the choice of a husband by a princess from the midst of congregated suitors; of Daaurani, daughter of Duumna, King of the upper part of the Dofib; and they repair to his court, and win the lady. The circum stances of this exploit, and its immediate consequences, form the subject of the fourth of the following Selections. The Mahabharata is one of the greatest stories ever told. Though the basic plot is widely known, there is much more to the epic than the dispute between Kouravas and Pandavas that led to the battle in Kurukshetra. It has innumerable sub-plots that accommodate fascinating meanderings and digressions, and it has rarely been translated in full, given its formidable length of 80,000 shlokas or couplets. This magnificent 10- volume unabridged translation of the epic is based on the Critical Edition compiled at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute. The fourth volume of the Mahabharata includes Virata Parva and almost all of Udyoga Parva. It describes the Pandavas thirteenth year of exile which they spend in disguise in King Virata s court. When, during their stay, the Kouravas and Trigartas invade Matsya to rob Virata of his cattle, the Pandavas defeat them in battle. With the period of banishment over, the Pandavas ask to be returned their share of the kingdom. This is refused and Udyoga Parva recounts the preparations for the inevitable war. Every conceivable human emotion figures in the Mahabharata, the reason why the epic continues to hold sway over our imagination. In this lucid, nuanced and confident translation, Bibek Debroy makes the Mahabharata marvellously accessible to contemporary readers.
