Revelations About Revelation was born of a Pastor's heart for laypeople, to help them understand a book of the Bible which has been grossly misinterpreted for ages by many preachers and Bible teachers. The author seeks to explain as simply as possible what the Apostle John was actually expressing to people of his own time, in the context of the circumstances they were facing, to help them stand firm for Jesus in the face of persecution. Too many times, Revelation has been presented as some horrifying prediction of the future, when John plainly states that he was sharing with the Church in his own time "the tribulation and the Kingdom and the patient endurance" (Revelation 1:9). He was not speaking of some far-off future tribulation, but the one they were facing at the end of the First Century AD, which has continued to this day and will continue in one form or another, in varying degrees of ferocity, until Christ returns. The author of the present work first preached through Revelation for the two congregations he was serving in 1985. He felt the need to pass this message along to more people than would ever hear him preach, so he began putting it all together in a book in 1987. After a busy life of ministry, other work, and public service, approaching retirement, he was finally able to edit and complete the basic manuscript and prepare it for publication, which he hopes will be helpful to the reader in understanding the strange images of Revelation that those who read may draw strength from the witness of John in difficult times and find courage to stand strong for Christ in any and all circumstances. Hebrews is a powerful meditation on the gospel. It is a sixty-minute sermon delivered to a worshiping congregation. The spiraling impact of theological exposition and pastoral exhortation is impressive. Hebrews weans us away from our preoccupation with the start of the Christian life and focuses our attention on the perseverance of faith. Life is not a sprint; it's a marathon. Faithfulness to the end affirms faith from the beginning. If we let the word of God have its way with us, Hebrews will deepen our faith in Christ and strengthen our faithfulness. Jean Toomer's Cane was the first major text of the Harlem Renaissance and the first important modernist text by an African-American writer. It powerfully depicts the terror in the history of American race relations, a public world of lynchings, race riots, and Jim Crow, and a private world of internalized conflict over identity and race which mirrored struggles in the culture at large. Toomer's own life reflected that internal conflict, and he has been an ambiguous figure in literary history, an author who wrote a text that had a tremendous impact on African American authors but who eventually tried to distance himself from Cane and from his identification as a black writer. In Jean Toomer and the Terrors of American History, Charles Scruggs and Lee VanDemarr examine original sources—Toomer's rediscovered early writings on politics and race, his extensive correspondence with Waldo Frank, and unpublished portions of his autobiographies—to show how the cultural wars of the 1920s influenced the shaping of Toomer's book and his subsequent efforts to escape the racial definitions of American society.
