Excerpt from The Famous History of the Life of King Henry the Eighth: A Historical Play, as Arranged for the Stage The Famous History of the Life of King Henry VIII. Is not the least popular of Shakespeare's historical plays. It is held by many that Shakespeare was assisted in the composi tion of this play by a younger dramatist, Fletcher. There is no direct evidence whatever of this; the opinion has been formed from a comparison of certain scenes in the play with the style and metre of Fletcher's work. Of this I am assured, that the play is touched by Shakespeare's genius; and if Fletcher was associated in the work, he must have been, as Mr. Hudson says, surprised out of himself. The picture of the Tudor period is so vivid, and the characterization at times so remarkable, that the revival of the play will, I trust, be welcome. The tragic interest ceases with the death of Katharine; but it will doubtless be recognised that the intention of the poet is to contrast, in the christening of Elizabeth, the sorrowful death of the divorced Queen with the brief triumph of Anne Bullen. I wish to express my indebtedness to Mr. Seymour Lucas, for his patient research and artistic skill, and to the many others who have rendered me valuable aid. Excerpt from Shakespeare's History of King Henry the Eighth This edition of Henry the Eighth has been prepared on the same plan as those of The Merchant of Venice and The Tempest, and I have little to add by way of preface beyond a grateful acknowledgment of the kindness with which the series has thus far been received. As in the case of the former plays, the text is the result of a careful collation of the Folio of 1623 with all the modern editions that have any critical value. With very few exceptions, the variations from the Folio, however trivial, have been mentioned in the notes, together with the readings adopted or proposed by the leading commentators. 'These textual questions are of interest to every student of Shakespeare, and my experience as a teacher has satisfied me that they may be profitably discussed even by boys and girls at school. Indeed, it sometimes happens that these babes in criticism are quick to see what is hidden from men reputed "wise and prudent." Their young eyes discern the simple truth through all the dust that successive generations of learned editors have raised in' their quarrels about it. In the Notes I have often referred the reader to illustrations of Shakespeare's English in the earlier books of the series, and the space thus gained has been used for historical annotations. The material for these has been drawn from a great variety of sources, and has been very carefully worked up. There are, of course, many notes which many of my readers will not need, but I think there are none that may not be of service, or at least of interest, to some of them. Excerpt from The Famous History of the Life of King Henry the Eighth I know no other play in Shakspere which is chargeable with a fault like this, none in which the moral sympathy of the spectator is not carried along with the main current of action to the end. The singularity of Henry VIII is that, while four-fifths of the play are occupied in matters which are to make us incapable of mirth [prologue, 25 the remaining fifth is devoted to joy and triumph, and ends with universal festivity.' Excerpt from Shakespeare's History of King Henry the Sixth, Vol. 2 As this play was an old one, revised to some ex tent by Shakespeare in his 'prentice days, it is very seldom, if ever, read in secondary schools and Shake speare clubs, or by other students and readers until they have become somewhat familiar with the dramatist. These and other minor reasons naturally affected my treatment of the play in the original edition of 1882, and have also had their influence in the present revision. The general plan of the new series has, however, been thoroughly carried out in both the introduction and the notes.
