"Occurring every five years, the British Art Show is the most ambitious survey exhibition of new and recent art from the UK. British Art Show 6 reflects the vitality and diversity of Britain's art scene, particularly its increasing internationalism." "Published on the occasion of the exhibition, this book brings together the work of 50 artists and artist groups living and working in Britain. It includes an introduction by curators Alex Farquharson and Andrea Schlieker, illustrated texts on each of the artists, and three round table discussions with artists on some of the exhibition's key thematic areas: the re-activation of eclectic aspects of nineteenth and twentieth century avant-gardes; geopolitics and the experience of conflict, travel and migration; and collaborative projects with communities and organisations outside art institutions."--BOOK JACKET.

Explore the groundbreaking performances and creative collaborations of iconic Scottish dancer and choreographer Michael Clark. Hailed as "British dance's true iconoclast," Michael Clark is a defining cultural figure in the contemporary dance world. Since emerging in the early 1980s as a prodigy at London's Royal Ballet School, Clark has remained at the forefront of innovation in dance, working in close collaboration with a broad range of pioneering artists such as Sarah Lucas, Leigh Bowery, Charles Atlas, Cerith Wyn Evans, Peter Doig, Elizabeth Peyton, Wolfgang Tillmans and musicians such as Mark E. Smith, Wire, Scritti Politti, and Relaxed Muscle. As a young choreographer, Clark brought together his classical ballet training with London's club culture, fashion, and punk rock to establish himself as one of the most innovative artists working in modern dance. His work--variously referencing punk, rock, and pop--is marked by a mixture of technical rigor and experimentation in a way that disrupts and reimagines our understanding of dance. This book features a series of enlightening essays and vivid illustrations of Clark's best-known performances, alongside archival material. Loosely tracing the chronological evolution of his career, a variety of cultural figures--ranging from Jarvis Cocker to Charles Atlas--write about the countercultural undercurrents with which Clark's work connects.

'Made in L.A. 2016: a, the, though, only' continues in this vein and investigates what is vital and distinctive about Los Angeles as an international destination and cutting-edge art center and how its artists--from vastly different backgrounds and disciplines--resist and defy categorization"--Foreword.

This first volume in the Tate Gallery Liverpool Critical Forum series is derived from a conference held in conjunction with the display of Abstract Expressionist Painting from the USA, which was mounted at Tate Gallery Liverpool from March 1992 to January 1993. The display comprised 21 paintings by 13 artists, including Ad Reinhardt, Norman Lewis, Adolph Gottlieb, Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky, Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning. The objectives of the conference, involving speakers from the international community of scholarship in the field, were: to elicit new observations, critical judgments and proposals from the knowledge base of abstract expressionism and perhaps to challenge some of its prevailing conventions; and to debate the role of the Tate Gallery Liverpool as a modifier of this field of knowledge.
