Excerpt from Society in America, Vol. 2 of 3 While we were at Detroit, we were most strongly urged to return thither by the Lakes, instead of by either of the Michigan roads. From place to place, in my previous travelling, I had been told of the charms of the Lakes, and especially of the Island of Mackinaw. Every officer's lady who has been in garrison there, is eloquent upon the delights of Mackinaw. As our whole party, however, could not spare time to make so wide a circuit, we had not intended to indulge ourselves with a further variation in our travels than to take the upper road back to Detroit; having left it by the lower. Excerpt from The History of the Society of Friends in America, Vol. 1: Part 3 We have used the term murder, and used it advisedly; for the martyrdom of the three Friends on Boston Common had been perpetrated contrary to the laws of the realm. The charter of Massachusetts in no degree empowered the local authorities to enact laws contrary to the fundamental principles of English jurisprudence and English liberty. In pursuing their despotic course, they did so likewise with the consciousness that it was repulsive to the feelings of the community. Towards the close of 1660, this was so intelligibly manifested, that for a time they deemed it prudent to suspend the operation of the law for execut ing Friends, and thus the life of Joseph Nicholson was saved. Excerpt from Bibliographical Society of America, Vol. 3: Proceeding and Papers; 1908 Looked on as a sport manuscript hunting is thus prince among book sports. But, while it is indeed a sport, it is more than a sport; it is on the one hand a useful art to be compared with fur hunting or hunting for food, and on the other hand it bears the same relation to science that the hunting for rare orchids or rare birds and beasts does to natural science. As a sport manuscript hunting belongs chiefly to the amateur, as a useful art chiefly to the bookseller and as a handmaid to science chiefly to the scholar, but the librarian knows something of the pleasures of each; the joy of bag ging a specimen perfect as to vellum, handwriting and orna ment, the keen delight in drawing a prize in the lottery of the market and the exquisite satisfaction of finding that a given ms. Excerpt from Life and Society in America San francisco, the Chief city of California, is the most important American town on the Pacific or iwestern Coast. Its progress is singularly unprecedented. The first White settlement was established in the Autumn of 1776, by a Spanish military post, in conjunction with a mission Of Franciscan friars, whose Object was the conversion of the Red Man. Scarcely had a year elapsed when a town was laid out, and a wooden house erected. The place received the name Of Yerba Buena. In 1847, however, the population having increased to four hundred and fifty, this designa tion was changed to that by which thestirring, prosperous city is now known. In this innovative study of the South Carolina Low Country, author Stephanie McCurry explores the place of the yeomanry in plantation society--the complex web of domestic and public relations within which they were enmeshed, and the contradictory politics of slave society by which that class of small farmers extracted the privileges of masterhood from the region's powerful planters. Insisting on the centrality of women as historical actors and gender as a category of analysis, this work shows how the fateful political choices made by the low-country yeomanry were rooted in the politics of the household, particularly in the customary relations of power male heads of independent households assumed over their dependents, whether slaves or free women and children. Such masterly prerogatives, practiced in the domestic sphere and redeemed in the public, explain the yeomanry's deep commitment to slavery and, ultimately, their ardent embrace of secession. By placing the yeomanry in the center of the drama, McCurry offers a significant reinterpretation of this volatile society on the road to Civil War. Through careful and creative use of a wide variety of archival sources, she brings vividly to life the small worlds of yeoman households, and the larger world of the South Carolina Low Country, the plantation South, and nineteenth-century America.
