Solid chemisorption technology is an effective form of energy conversion for recovering low-grade thermal energy, but limited thermal conductivity and agglomeration phenomena greatly limit its performance. Over the past 20 years, researchers have explored the use of thermal conductive porous matrix to improve heat and mass transfer performance. Their efforts have yielded composite sorption technology, which is now extensively being used in refrigeration, heat pumps, energy storage, and de-NOx applications. This book reviews the latest technological advances regarding composite solid sorbents. Various development methods are introduced and compared, kinetic models are presented, and different cycles are analyzed. Given its scope, the book will benefit experts involved in developing novel materials and cycles for energy conversion, as well as engineers working to develop effective commercialized energy conversion systems based on solid sorption technology

Over the last decade, the availability of new devices and membranes has led to the development of modern hemodialysis techniques in which clinical tolerance and efficiency have significantly improved patient morbidity and mortality. Nevertheless, there are still limitations imposed by hemodialysis, manifested by the long-term complications occurring in patients treated for several years.Since most of these complications seem to be related to the chronic inflammation of ESRD patients and the progressive accumulation of middle-large molecules such as beta-2-microglobulin, GIP, leptin and others, a novel approach is needed, capable of adequately removing these substances from the body of the patient. New polymers with a biocompatible surface and high affinity for specific molecules have already been introduced to the market, and adsorption might in fact represent a new form of solute removal.Featuring articles by renowned experts, this volume provides the reader with a comprehensive summary of the most updated technology in the field of hemodialysis. New devices and techniques are described and discussed in detail, complemented by preliminary results; the rationale for adsorptive therapies completes the analysis. Residents and fellows, as well as staff physicians and members of the academic and scientific community involved in practice and research in the field of hemodialysis will find this book a valuable addition to their bookshelves.

This book is concerned with functional nanomaterials, materials containing specific, predictable nanostructures whose chemical composition, or interfacial structure enables them to perform a specific job: to destroy, sequester, or detect some material that constitutes an environmental threat. Nanomaterials have a number of features that make them ideally suited for this job: they have a high surface area, high reactivity, easy dispersability, and rapid diffusion, to name a few. The purpose of this book is to showcase how these features can be tailored to address some of the environmental remediation and sensing/detection problems faced by mankind today. A number of leading researchers have contributed to this volume, painting a picture of diverse synthetic strategies, structures, materials, and methods. The intent of this book is to showcase the current state of environmental nanomaterials in such a way as to be useful both as a research resource and as a graduate level textbook. We have organized this book into sections on nanoparticle-based remediation strategies, nanostructured inorganic materials (e.g. layered materials like the apatites), nanostructured organic/inorganic hybrid materials, and the use of nanomaterials to enhance the performance of sensors. The capital and regeneration costs of activated carbon and ion exchange media suggest that better process economics may be achieved with disposable sorbents for the treatment of metals-contaminated water and waste streams. An extensive literature search was conducted to identify potentially inexpensive sorbents that could be disposed, rather than regenerated, after use. The literature indicates that many materials with this potential are readily available, either as process by-products or in their natural form. The most promising sorbents identified in this literature search will be tested at bench scale with synthetic metal solutions.

The purpose of this book is to present in a monographic and systematised form a review of all the literature devoted to polyurethane-based polymeric sorbents in separation chemistry. The primary types of sorbents dealt with are polyurethane foams and open-pore polyurethanes. The structure of the monograph follows this dichotomy. A book of this nature should stimulate thinking and incite its reader to consult the original literature. It will, however, not make such a consultation superfluous. A fair amount of the results described in this monograph constitute the main activity of investigation which took place in the authors laboratories during the past decade.
