Excerpt from Source Book and Bibliographical Guide for American Church History Through the publication of several source collections, much has been done to assist fthe student of American political, social and economic history. But no corresponding assistance has been given to such as are interested in the more specifically religious history of our nation. It is true of course, that for the colonial period, political history to a considerable degree resolves itself into the religious and that, therefore, the source books already published contain much material that is serviceable to the church historian. For the national period, however, with its multiplication of church organization, its controversies and divisions, its nation-wide revivals, and its mission ary extension at home and abroad, no source material has been assembled for convenient access. Hence the publication of this volume, which within the briefest possible space embodies the most significant documents for the entire-field of American church history. The compiler wishes to state that the viewpoint from which he has approached the subject is that of regarding the church, not as the custodian of some divinely-revealed deposit of truth, nor as super naturally detached from an environment that is ever affecting her inner life and organization. In his selection of material he has been guided by the principle of choosing only such documents as most significantly set forth the contribution that the church has made to the progress of American society, and the manner in which from time to time she has adjusted herself to her new and changing environ ment. Denominationalism, therefore, has been relegated to the background. Ardent denominationalists. Will find their respective bodies recognized only in so far as these have played a strategic part in the development of American Christianity as a whole. The only exception is that in the case of some small but significant groups, material has been inserted to remove prevailing ignorance or miscon ception. Excerpt from A History of the American Church to the Close of the Nineteenth Century IN writing the following History of that branch of the Catholic Church, known in law as the Protestant Episcopal Church, in the United States of America, the author has had in mind the fact of its circulation both in Great Britain and in America. On this account some explanations are made, and some facts are stated which, otherwise, might have been omitted, but which he believes to be at least helpful to the more complete understanding of the subject in both countries. Excerpt from The Church of God: A Social History Like all histories, however, this is also a unique story. The twists and turns in the history of the Church of God smack of the isolation of Cleveland, Tennessee, and of the leadings of a.i Tomlinson and other homespun prophets. Crews writes of earn est men struggling to hammer out a code of morality in a region where tobacco-raising was ethically more problematic than slum housing and where the kkk was far better known than the afl. In the end, this is the story of a church that contributed to the birth of worldwide Pentecostalism but that has spent most of its history in its own world confronting its own problems. Crews knows the Church of God well - both experientially and as a scholar. He has read the writings of the prophets; he has talked and sung with the true believers. All denominational his tory is controversial; no telling of it is likely to satisfy everyone. But Crews has written with fairness and restraint about a move ment that could hardly have expected such respect twenty years ago. That is as it should be. Pentecostals have earned a place in history, and it is fitting that their stories be told respectfully. Having won such regard, it is fitting that Pentecostals listen to an objective accounting of their past. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
