No country under the son can bring a parallel to the size and strength of the London English-bred drag horses, and the truth of this assertion is at once confirmed by seeing a team of these noble animals in the streets, or of those employed in the London coal trade, drawing a heavily-laden waggon up a narrow, ill-pared lane, leading from the wharfs on the Thames. Neither is their docility and obedience to the voice of their driver less worthy of admiration, the one in the shafts especially, whose bridle is without winkers, to enable him the better to guide the direction of the ponderous machine to which he is attached. Notwithstanding this, for agricultural purposes, the common ran of cart horses in the southern and midland counties of England are far from being what they should be. They are generally too large for the quality and quantity of their food; aucl although those which constitute what are called the bell teams of the farmers are the pride of themselves and their carters, it is more than doubtful whether they earn the food they devour, and which is essential to their handsome appearance and action. Again, their tread is in many cases too heavy for the land they work upon, much of which is seriously injured in wet seasons by the deep impression of their hoofs. But the principal objection to the midland English cart horse for agricultural purposes is, his great size and weight occasioning a slowness of motion, which operates against him in his work; and it is only when highly fed, as in the case of the London horses alluded to, but which costly feed is beyond the means.of the farmer, that he exhihits the activity and quickness of step apparcntTin that class.
