Outbound One: The First Starship is a fictional account of man's first attempt to leave our solar system by striking out in an interstellar journey to establish an outpost in a nearby star system containing an earth-like planet. It presents a chronological account of the physical events encountered during this historic mission as well as the psychological reactions of both crew and passengers to this one-way trip to the stars. It attempts to answer the recurring questions of the ability of the human race to survive interstellar space travel and to establish viable colonies beyond the limits of our home solar system or be doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past.

If you were offered a spot in the first colony going to Mars, would you take it? And, what would that be like? Months aboard a starship with dozens of other people, so far from Earth that there would be nothing but stars in the sky. What would it be like setting up domes to live in on a planet with a toxic atmosphere? Your trips outside would be in a spacesuit. Every single thing you did would be a first for humankind. What would you find on Mars? Would you find evidence of a previous civilization? Artifacts a million years old? If you were offered the chance to go, would you?

Jerry Thigpen's study on the history of the Combat Talon is the first effort to tell the story of this wonderfully capable machine. This weapons system has performed virtually every imaginable tactical event in the spectrum of conflict and by any measure is the most versatile C-130 derivative ever produced. First modified and sent to Southeast Asia (SEA) in 1966 to replace theater unconventional warfare (UW) assets that were limited in both lift capability and speed the Talon I quickly adapted to theater UW tasking including infiltration and resupply and psychological warfare operations into North Vietnam. After spending four years in SEA and maturing into a highly respected UW weapons system the Joint Chief of Staff (JCS) chose the Combat Talon to lead the night low-level raid on the North Vietnamese prison camp at Son Tay. Despite the outcome of the operation the Talon I cemented its reputation as the weapons system of choice for long-range clandestine operations. In the period following the Vietnam War United States Air Force (USAF) special operations gradually lost its political and financial support which was graphically demonstrated in the failed Desert One mission into Iran. Thanks to congressional supporters like Earl Hutto of Florida and Dan Daniel of Virginia funds for aircraft upgrades and military construction projects materialized to meet the ever-increasing threat to our nation. Under the leadership of such committed hard-driven officers as Brenci Uttaro Ferkes Meller and Thigpen the crew force became the most disciplined in our Air Force. It was capable of penetrating hostile airspace at night in a low-level mountainous environment covertly to execute any number of unconventional warfare missions.

The date is 1970 of the Galactic Era, almost three thousand years from now, and the Republic, created by the human race but not yet dominated by it, finds itself in an all-out war against the Teroni Federation, an alliance of races that resent Man’s growing military and economic power. The rebel starship, the Theodore Roosevelt, under the command of Wilson Cole, is preparing to lead Cole’s ragtag armada into the Republic, even though he is outnumbered thousands to one. Cole is convinced that the government has become an arrogant and unfeeling political entity and must be overthrown. The trick is to avoid armed conflict with the vast array of ships, numbering in the millions, in the Republic’s Navy. For a time Cole’s forces strike from cover and race off to safety, but he soon sees that is no way to conquer the mightiest political and military machine in the history of the galaxy. He realizes that he must reach Deluros VIII, the headquarters world of the Republic (and of the race of Man), in order to have any effect on the government at all – but Deluros VIII is the best-protected world in the Republic. But a new threat looms on the horizon. Cole, the Valkyrie, David Copperfield, Sharon Blacksmith, Jacovic, and the rest of the crew of the Teddy R face their greatest challenge yet, and the outcome will determine the fate of the entire galaxy. From the Hardcover edition.

It is the forty-first century. Falling prey to unimagined solar processes, the sun has exploded and destroyed the Earth. Thousands of survivors move outward into space aboard the Space Star Silver Streak. Thirteen years have passed as they search for habitable planets to colonize. Now, with the ship almost emptied, the mission nearly at an end, the most recently established colony signals distress. Something huge, ominous, mysterious, and inexplicable is wandering through the galaxy. Ten years ago Captain Richard Cameron resigned from command. Faced with a new and completely unexplained crisis, he returns to the bridge, reunites his old crew, and sets off on a voyage that may mean the end of his career or the salvation of civilization--or both!
