The following objectives supersede those contained in the plan; otherwise, most of what was initially published in the Comprehensive Management Plan remains valid for Steamtown National Historic Site. To provide a setting evocative of steam railroading that retains the historic industrial working character of the yard, incorporating the preservation of historic structures to the greatest extent practicable. To provide sufficient year-round facilities and programs so that visitors can understand the role of steam railroads in the growth of our country, while allowing opportunities for hands-on, active experiences, including riding on a steam era train and showing how a steam era railroad operated. To preserve and/ or restore locomotives and cars in the park collection for purposes of excursion, interpretation, and exhibition. In order to improve interpretive and/ or educational opportunities, selective acquisition may be made in the future.
