Professor Davidson has given us in this book an interesting general summary of the Stoic philosophy. Students who are familiar with the literature of the subject will not find much that is new to them in this summary; and perhaps the interests even of the general reader would have been better consulted if the author had gone more into detail on many of the interesting points that have recently been discussed. In particular, we should have been glad to see a fuller statement of the parts played by the various members of the Stoic school in the formulation of the creed. From the point of view of the exact history of philosophy, we should have preferred to see less use made of the late Stoics and more use made of the fragments of Zeno, Cleanthes, and Chrysippus; for there can be no doubt that these were the formative thinkers of the school, and that the members of the Middle and Later Stoa did little but repeat the older arguments, enforcing them by apt illustration and clever rhetoric, but often, also, losing consistency by borrowing ideas from other schools. Probably one might go further and say that all the main ideas of Stoicism are to be found already in Zeno -- that the task of Cleanthes was simply that of systematizing, and the task of Chrysippus, that of finding new arguments for old conclusions. The general relation of the main thinkers of the school is correctly stated by Prof. Davidson, but in a book of this size room might surely have been found for a more detailed treatment of the question. The object of the book, however, is different. Its object is to present Stoicism as a single closed system of ideas, important by reason of its high moral tone and its influence on several successive generations. The author has achieved this task in a distinctly interesting way. He has chosen characteristic and forcible passages from Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius, and has given us a fairly complete picture of the Stoic beliefs, especially on the ethical and theological sides. The book also contains much shrewd and sensible criticism, of which pp. 99-104 on the Stoic cosmology are perhaps the most favorable specimen.--The Classical Review, Vol. 21

Excerpt from The Stoic Creed These chapters are a contribution towards the exposition and just appreciation of Stoicism-which, whatever its defects, was a system of lofty principles, illustrated in the lives of many noble men. The subject has perennial fascination; and there are not wanting signs that it appeals with special attractiveness to cultured minds at the present day. It has both speculative and practical value ; its analysis of human nature and its theory of knowledge, no less than its ethical teaching, giving insight into the problems of the universe and the right mode of guiding life. As an important stage in the march of philosophical thought, and as a luminous chapter in the history of natural theology, it solicits our attention, and will repay our study. Ample quotations are designedly made from the Stoic writers themselves and from ancient Greek and Latin expositions. Responsibility for the translation of most of the passages must be accepted by myself. One exception, however, has to be made. Stoicism is coming back in a big way. Seen as a remedy for the craziness of the times we live in, it is experiencing a great surge in academic and cultural interest. Yet, can one live stoically and be a creative artist at the same time? Delving into its underlying tenets, obscure restrictions and limits of applicability, Stankiewicz critically explores Stoicism and its complex association with artistic creativity. Stoicism and artistic creativity are two great displays of the human spirit. Yet, there are multiple reasons to suspect that they are at odds with each other. Popular culture encapsulates this problem in the figure of the rational, yet emotionally remote Stoic, who achieves serenity through withdrawal, and the contrasting figure of the “cursed poet,” “tormented artist,” or simply a rock star, who lives in a whirl of creative energy, yet falls short of quietude. Is this contrast valid? Other disciplines, including psychology, have explored this problem. But it has never been done philosophically. Pioneering in its philosophical approach, this book discusses how artistic creativity and its problems of identity, expression and self-creation serve as a great testing ground for Stoicism, as well as its theoretical challenges and practical limits. Stankiewicz presents a detailed investigation into the stereotypes of Stoic life that seeks to explain the cause of Stoicism’s modern revival. This book is an essential read for anyone captivated by Stoicism’s complex allure.
