Excerpt from Studies in Mystical Religion NO one doubts today that one of the main approaches to the meaning of religion is through the nature of the soul of man. It would no doubt be a mistake to push the method of the inner way to the exclusion of all other methods of studying religion, but it is certain that no body can tell us what religion is until he has sounded the deeps within man, and has dealt with the testimony of personal consciousness. Excerpt from At One With the Invisible: Studies in Mysticism This book is the outgrowth of a seminar in Mysticism recently conducted by the writer in Yale University. There is, as Professor James suggests, an element of mysticism in all religion, and the aim of the seminar was to study its various aspects in the religious experience and teachings of those in whom it was conspicuous. All of the contributors to this volume, save one, took part in the seminar, and the writer desires to acknowledge again their kindness in render ing such valuable service and in permitting further use of their material in this way. It seemed advisable that a larger audience should share in the benefits of ir - hence this publication. Besides serving as an introduction to the study of Mysticism, the papers will prove especially service able to students of the Psychology of Religion. It would no doubt be a mistake to push the method of the inner way to the exclusion of all other methods of studying religion, but it is certain that nobody can tell us what religion is until he has sounded the deeps within man, and has dealt with the testimony of personal consciousness. The mystics have in all ages and in all lands - semper et ubique - been intent on finding a direct way to God. They have been voices, often crying in the wilderness, announcing the nearness of God, and calling men from the folly of seeking Him where, from the nature of the case, he could not be found. Their message strikes a note which appeals profoundly to our generation, and for obvious reasons there has been a revival of interest in them. I hope these studies of mine will contribute to this interest, and will throw positive light on the problems of mystical religion. I have had before me, in all my labour on this volume, the desire to make my work advance the plans of my beloved friend John Wilhelm Rowntree, who is now in the unseen realm. Excerpt from The Mystical Element of Religion as Studied in Saint Catherine of Genoa and Her Friends, Vol. 2: Critical Studies The picture Of Catherine's life and teaching which was attempted in the previous volume will, I hope, have been sufficiently vivid to stimulate in the reader a desire to try and go deeper, and to get as near as may be to the driving forces, the metaphysical depths Of her life. And yet it is Obvious that, if we would understand something Of these, we must pro ceed slowly and thoroughly, and must begin with comparatively Superficial questions. Or rather, we must begin by studying her temperamental and psycho-physical endowment and con dition, and then the literary in uences that stimulated and helped to mould these things, as though all this were not secondary and but the material and occasion Of the forces and self-determinations to be considered later on. Excerpt from Studies in Religion That which we see, touch, -ih a word, which appears to all or any of the senses, - is body, or firm, or appearance; and that which is not body, but the embodied, not appearance, but the appearer, we call spirit. Spirit is then the invisible force, behind or in every thing that appears. The outward is not reality, but the form of it: the outward is the manifestation of the inward: the sensuous is the apparition of the spiritual. The human frame, no more than the stars and flowers, but equally with them, are appearances of an in visible reality, - of spirit. The star is bony, so the flower, so our form all equally impres sions on the senses of an invisible force: the star one form of spirit, the flower another, the human frame another - all equally wonderful, divine, mystic. It is not in a figurative sense that flowers and stars are our brothers. They and we are alike the out-putting of invisible force: we are stars glowing here and there in the immeasurable arch of God's being; we are flowers springing upward from the earth and withering to it again and the flower and the star, like unto us, are mortal forms of immortal spirit. Excerpt from The Mystical Element of Religion as Studied in Saint Catherine of Genoa and Her Friends, Vol. 1: Introduction and Biographies Four months have sufficed to require a Second Impression Of this lengthy study Of difficult and complex themes. And this, evidently not because, but in spite of, certain peculiarities of style, - Germanisms strange on the part Of the son of a pure Scotchwoman, resident in England for some thirty-six years and more. I take this success to be due, predominantly, to the pro found importance and abiding interest Of the subject Of the book, and to the general character Of the method attempted here. May the very defects of the work help to bring home to the reader this inexhaustible richness Of its subject-matter, and to indicate the pre-existence, the super-eminence, the independence of the august Object Of religion, as compared with those very aspirations and convictions which this Object itself occasions and incites, and which our analyses so in adequately fathom. God, the Divine Spirit, is indeed before, within, and after all our truest dignity and deepest disquiet. If some years hence a Second Edition is called for, I Shall hope greatly to improve the book, largely by the aid of my various critics' strictures and requirements, which, so far, have. Excerpt from The Making of a Mystic In the Lent terms of the years 1915, 1916, and 1917, I delivered courses of Lectures at Cambridge, on "Spiritual Exercises and their Psychological Results"; "The Development of the Religious Consciousness in East and West"; and "The Practice of Mysticism." These lectures, which were given in the Psychological lecture room, were purely academic. They brought me into contact, however, with a number of people whose interest in mysticism, and in the spiritual experience and methods of meditation of saints of all religions, was not merely that of the scholar. I found myself being constantly asked for advice by men and women who wished to become pilgrims on the mystic way, and who felt the need for intense religious experience, without having any opportunity for practising the austerities of the contemplative life. I myself, as I had better confess quite frankly, am a mystic, in so far as I find the world of spiritual experience more real than the material world, and look on our union with God as the aim of humanity. And though I agree with Dr. Rendel Harris that, "those people who talk of undertaking the guidance of souls are both dangerous and impertinent," I could not avoid giving these seekers after truth such help as was within my power, which was little enough, of course.
