During the 1990s, Suriname was subject to exogenous shocks that were exacerbated by inadequate macroeconomic policy responses. During that decade, fiscal and monetary policies tended to vastly amplify the effects of negative shocks to bauxite export receipts, leading to various episodes of nearhyperinflation. Output growth was also highly volatile, reflecting to some extent the countrys dependence on mining exports, but more so the highly inadequate macroeconomic policies. In recent years, the outlook has turned substantively more positive. The favorable external environment and the stability-oriented policies of the Venetiaan administration have boosted confidence in the economy, leading to increased investment, domestic economic activity, and employment. Nonetheless, the economy continues to be based largely on commodity exports, mainly bauxite, oil, and gold, while nontraditional agricultural exports face significant developmental and export hurdles. The annual joint meeting of experts from the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the World Health Organisation was held in September 2001. This purpose of this meeting was to: review data analysis methods for estimating the maximum residue levels arising from pesticide use according to good agricultural practices; and review toxicological and related data for estimating acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) of pesticides for human health. This report presents information on ADIs of a number of pesticides, maximum residue levels, and general principles for the evaluation of pesticides. It provides summaries of the toxicological evaluations of pesticide residues in food, together with the recommendations made by the joint meeting.

During the meeting the FAO Panel of Experts was responsible for reviewing pesticide use patterns (good agricultural practices), data on the chemistry and composition of pesticides and methods of analysis for pesticide residues and for estimating the maximum residue levels that might occur as a a result of the use of pesticides according to good agricultural practices. The WHO Core Assessment Group was responsible for reviewing toxicological and related data and for estimating, where possible, acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) of pesticides for humans. This report contains information on ADIs, maximum residue limits (MRLs) and general principles for the evaluation of pesticides. The supporting documents (on residues and toxicological evaluations) contain detailed monographs on these pesticides and include comments on analytical methods.

The annual Joint Meeting of the FAO Panel of Experts on Pesticide Residues in Food and the Environment and the WHO Core Assessment Group on Pesticide Residues was held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 18 to 27 September 2007. The Meeting was held in pursuance of recommendations made by previous meetings and accepted by the governing bodies of FAO and WHO that studies should be undertaken jointly by experts to evaluate possible hazards to humans arising from the occurrence of pesticide residues in foods. This report contains information on ADIs, ARfDs, maximum residue levels, and general principles for the evaluation of pesticides. The recommendations of the Joint Meeting, including further research and information, are proposed for use by Member governments of the respective agencies and other interested parties.

The pesticides diazinon, glyphosate and malathion were evaluated at the Joint Meeting of the FAO Panel of Experts on Pesticide Residues in Food and the Environment and the WHO Core Assessment Group on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) held in May 2016. This followed a recommendation that they be re-evaluated due to public health concerns identified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the availability of a number of new studies. The meeting reviewed epidemiological, toxicological and related data in order to establish acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) and acute reference doses (ARfDs) of the pesticides for humans. It also estimated dietary exposures (both short- and long-term) to the pesticides reviewed and performed related dietary risk assessments.
