No monster is safe in the path of a determined woman. A little girl with a dark secret and a devious imagination. A disappearance that sparks unexpected connections between old friends. An ancient mystery no one wants solved. A series of bizarre murders under the light of a full moon. These are the cases tackled by the Frontenac Sisters, Hyla and Lizeth. None of these cases are easy and each one is dangerous, but the sisters never back down. They fight for each victim and tirelessly pursue each monster. Evil better beware. The Frontenac Sisters' adventures continue with Case No. 5, Black at Night. Stories aren't just an escape. Dreams aren't nonsense. Nightmares are very real. And truth is just as strange as fiction. When I say I am called Valmont, the name will convey no impression to the reader, one way or another. My occupation is that of private detective in London, but if you ask any policeman in Paris who Valmont was he will likely be able to tell you, unless he is a recent recruit. If you ask him where Valmont is now, he may not know, yet I have a good deal to do with the Parisian police. (The Triumph of Eugéne Valmont) Robert Barr (1849–1912) was a Scottish-Canadian short story writer and novelist, born in Glasgow, Scotland. His famous detective character Eugéne Valmont, fashioned after Sherlock Holmes, is said to be the inspiration behind Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot. Barr also wrote two parodies of Holmes as a form of flattery to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the fashion of other such parodies being written at that time. And in spite of these parodies the two remained good friends all through their lives. A must read for all Holmes' enthusiasts! Although fantasy and supernatural literature have long and celebrated histories, many critics contend that the fantastic and the supernatural have no place in the logical, rational, world of the detective story. This book is the first extensive study of the fantastic in detective fiction and it explores the highly debated question of whether detective fiction and the fantastic can comfortably coexist. The "locked room" mystery--which often uses the fantastic as a red herring to eventually be debunked by reason and logic--has long been among the most popular subgenres of detective fiction. This book also explores stories featuring almost supernaturally gifted detectives, stories where the supernatural is truly encountered, and stories with ambiguous endings. Close to 500 detective stories from 1841 to 2000, in which the fantastic or supernatural plays a central role, are discussed and analyzed. Although not all the stories are judged to be successful as detective tales, in the great majority, the fantastic enlivens the tale and deepens the mystery without weakening the detective elements.

This volume brings together sixteen chilling cases of these supernatural sleuths, pitting themselves against the peril of ultimate evil. Here are encounters from the casebooks of the Victorian haunted house investigators John Bell and Flaxman Low, from Carnacki, the Edwardian battler against the abyss, and from horror master Arthur Machen's Mr Dyson, a man-about-town and meddler in strange things.Connoisseurs will find rare cases such as those of Allen Upward's 'The Ghost Hunter', Robert Barr's Eugene Valmont (who may have inspired Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot) and Donald Campbell's young explorer Leslie Vane, the James Bond of the jazz age, who battles against occult enemies of the British Empire.
