This is a story about what can happen to a girl when she starts her period. People do not need to be able to read in order to understand the story. Susan does not understand what is happening to her when she finds blood on her sheets and clothes. She does not tell her mother, but goes straight to school. In making her case she draws chiefly from the thought of Kant and Rousseau, who articulated very different theories on the proper way to "come of age."
