Book Synopsis Fundamental Interactions and the Nucleus by : Roger John Blin-Stoyle
Download or read book Fundamental Interactions and the Nucleus written by Roger John Blin-Stoyle and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt:
Dramatic progress has been made in all branches of physics since the National Research Council's 1986 decadal survey of the field. The Physics in a New Era series explores these advances and looks ahead to future goals. The series includes assessments of the major subfields and reports on several smaller subfields, and preparation has begun on an overview volume on the unity of physics, its relationships to other fields, and its contributions to national needs. Nuclear Physics is the latest volume of the series. The book describes current activity in understanding nuclear structure and symmetries, the behavior of matter at extreme densities, the role of nuclear physics in astrophysics and cosmology, and the instrumentation and facilities used by the field. It makes recommendations on the resources needed for experimental and theoretical advances in the coming decade.

The revised edition of this established work presents an extended overview of recent applications of symmetry to the description of atomic nuclei, including a pedagogical introduction to symmetry concepts using simple examples. Following a historical overview of the applications of symmetry in nuclear physics, attention turns to more recent progress in the field. Special emphasis is placed on the introduction of neutron-proton and boson-fermion degrees of freedom. Their combination leads to a supersymmetric description of pairs and quartets of nuclei. Expanded and updated throughout, the book now features separate chapters on the nuclear shell model and the interacting boson model, the former including discussion of recent results on seniority in a single-j shell. Both theoretical aspects and experimental signatures of dynamical (super)symmetries are carefully discussed. This book focuses on nuclear structure physics, but its broad scope makes it suitable for final-year or post-graduate students and researchers interested in understanding the power and beauty of symmetry methods in physics. Review of the 1st Edition: "The subject of this book, symmetries in physical systems, with particular focus on atomic nuclei, is of the utmost importance in modern physical science. In contrast to most treatments, frequently characterized by fearsome formalism, this book leads the reader step-by-step, in an easily understandable way, through this fascinating field...this book is remarkably accessible to both theorists and experimentalists. Indeed, I view it as essential reading for experimental nuclear structure physicists. This is one of the finest volumes on this subject I have ever encountered." Prof. R.F. Casten, Yale University

The book provides theoretical and phenomenological insights on the structure of matter, presenting concepts and features of elementary particle physics and fundamental aspects of nuclear physics. Starting with the basics (nomenclature, classification, acceleration techniques, detection of elementary particles), the properties of fundamental interactions (electromagnetic, weak and strong) are introduced with a mathematical formalism suited to undergraduate students. Some experimental results (the discovery of neutral currents and of the W± and Z0 bosons; the quark structure observed using deep inelastic scattering experiments) show the necessity of an evolution of the formalism. This motivates a more detailed description of the weak and strong interactions, of the Standard Model of the microcosm with its experimental tests, and of the Higgs mechanism. The open problems in the Standard Model of the microcosm and macrocosm are presented at the end of the book.

Symmetries in Atomic Nuclei aims to present an overview of recent applications of symmetry to the description of atomic nuclei. Special care is given to a pedagogical introduction of symmetry concepts using simple examples. After a historical overview of the applications of symmetry in nuclear physics, progress in the field during the last decade is reviewed. Special emphasis is put on the introduction of neutron-proton and boson-fermion degrees of freedom. Their combination leads to a supersymmetric description of pairs and quartets of nuclei. Both theoretical aspects and experimental signatures of dynamical (super)symmetries are carefully discussed. Case studies show how these symmetries are displayed by real atomic nuclei which have been studied experimentally using state-of-the art spectroscopy. This book focuses on nuclear structure physics and has been written by active investigators in the field, but its scope is wider and is intended for final-year or post-graduate students and researchers interested in understanding the power and beauty of symmetry methods in physics.

The new results on the neutrino oscillations belong to the highlights of the particle and nuclear physics in the last few years. We tried to include these new developments in the present edition. Furthermore, we included a new section on the double beta decay. Of special interest is the possible neutrino less double beta decay. Its existence would require a non-trivial extension of the standard model of elementary particles. We have much appreciated the discussion and support of Gerry Garvey (Los Alamos) during the preparation of the revised version of the chapter on neu trino oscillations and the new chapter on double beta decay. We would like to thank Kunio Inoue (Sendai) for informing us about the newest results on neutrino mixing. We would like to thank Claudia Ries (Heidelberg) for carefully reading the manuscript and Jiirgen Sawinski (Heidelberg) for the excellent work he has done in formatting the book.

Low energy neutron beams are used to address many questions in nuclear physics, particle physics and astrophysics. The scientific issues include elucidating the nature of time reversal noninvariance; understanding the origin of the baryon asymmetry in the Universe; describing the weak interaction between quarks and between nucleons; understanding the origin of the elements in stellar and big bang nucleosynthesis. This book summarizes how spallation neutron sources work and discuss the advantages of pulsed beams in reducing systematic errors in precision measurements. It also describes recent breakthroughs in ultracold neutron production, together with the physics that will be addressed by the new generation of intense neutron sources. Contents:Spallation Neutron Source with Emphasis on Target Systems (T A Gabriel)The European Spallation Source Project ESS, and Its Particle Physics Programme (D Dubbers)Neutron Decay Beyond the Standard Model (P Herczeg)Symmetry Violation in Heavy Nuclei (V Gudkov)Project of New Neutron EDM Measurements (A Serebov et al.)Magnetic Trapping of Ultracold Neutrons: Prospects for an Improved Measurement of the Neutron Lifetime (P R Huffman et al.)Parity-Violating Neutron Spin Rotation Observable (D M Markoff & F E Wietfeldt)A New Approach to Measuring the Neutron Decay Correlations with Cold Neutrons at Lansce (W S Wilburn et al.)and other papers Readership: Researchers and graduate students in nuclear, high energy, particle and accelerator physics.
