Excerpt from Synopsis of the Proceedings of the Department of Massachusetts Woman's Relief Corps, Auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic: From Its Institution in 1879, Until the Close of the Year 1886; First to Seventh Department Conventions To Massachusetts must ever be accorded the credit of having first conceived, and carried into successful operation, a State organization composed entirely of women, ritualistic in form, and having an almost perfect system of Reports and Returns similar to that of the Grand Army of the Republic and its object the relief of sick or disabled veterans of the Union Army and their dependent families. To have assisted in laying the corner stone of the present grand structure, known the world over as the only auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic, will, I know, prove a lasting satisfaction to every one of its pioneers, and I trust this brief history will bring to many the happiness it has afforded me, of living over once again those days of anxiety and discouragements, but now so gloriously crowned by success and achievements worthy the highest endeavors of woman.
