In every instance the characters have been drawn from actual life; and, indeed, some of them, yet alive, have borne testimony to the fidelity of their likeness, as represented in the sketches where they first appeared. Nay, the very names, as well of the individuals as of the places, and the scenery described, are, with scarcely an exception, real.
