This guidebook is divided into four main parts. In Part 1: Foundations of Success for Men of Color, the theoretical perspectives undergirding a revised teaching and learning enterprise that prioritizes the success of men of color are discussed. Also explored are common barriers and challenges facing men of color that necessitate enhanced teaching practices. A key focus of these barriers are on environmental factors (external pressures that occur outside of college that influence student success in college) and on the socialization of men of color in education. Parts II and III articulate the promising practices derived from the comprehensive study of faculty. Specifically, Part II: Building Relationships with Men of Color discusses the establishment of personal relationships with men of color as a foundational precursor to efficacious teaching practices. In Part III: Promising Teaching Practices, the authors address the role of relevancy and interactivity (among other factors) in effectively communicating academic content to men of color. The guidebook concludes with Part IV: A Note to Instructional Leaders with strategies that academic leaders can employ to inculcate the values and approaches discussed in this volume in their departments and colleges.

The Center for Community College Student Engagement received funding from"The Kresge Foundation to deepen its work on improving outcomes for men of color in community colleges. The primary goals of the initiative were: (1) to advance the understanding within the community college field regarding the assets and challenges that men of color brought to college with them; (2) to lift up the student voice as central to the work; (3) to identify institutional factors that inhibited or enhanced community college progress and success for Black males and Latinos; and (4) to assist community colleges in serving these groups. This manual was originally designed as part of the initiative to conduct focus group sessions at six participating colleges and has been adapted for wider use. These structured discussions will help the college better understand students' experiences, as well as uncover possible strategies to consider for improvement. This manual also contains an appendix of templates designed to help Coordinators facilitate the focus groups and may be modified to best meet the needs of the institution. This volume dedicated to the engagement of African American males in community colleges furthers the research agenda focused on improving the educational outcomes of African American males. The theme engagement also supports the anti-deficit approach to research on African American males developed by renowned research scholars. The true success of African American males in community colleges rests on how well these institutions engage young men into their institutions. This will require community colleges to examine policies, pedagogical strategies, and institutional practices that alienate African American males and fosters a culture of underachievement. The authors who have contributed to this volume all speak from the same script which proves than when African American males are properly engaged in an education that is culturally relevant, they will succeed. Therefore, this book will benefit ALL who support the education of African American males. It is our intent that this book will contribute to the growing body of knowledge that exists in this area as well as foster more inquiry into the achievement of African American males.
