It is generally acknowledged today that the most effective strategy for toxic and hazardous waste management is: reduction, reuse and recycle. However, to date most of the activity has been in treatment technologies. This book focuses on recent technological issues commercially available or in various stages of implementation. Developments in the U.S. and Europe in the area of waste management policy and regulation are also examined since management and remediation have usually been conducted in response to regulatory requirements. This book serves as a state of the art resource on technologies and methodologies for the environmental protection manager involved in decisions concerning the management of toxic and hazardous waste.

"From the Introduction: " The purpose of this program is to identify and assess international technologies that could be utilized for hazardous waste site remediation within the United States. This report summarizes the results of Phase I of this program, which identified international alternative technologies potentially applicable to Superfund site remediation. All remedial technologies identified as a result of the Phase I activities are described in this report. Recommendations are also provided for further study in Phase II which will focus on the most promising international technologies. General Approach The technical approach for Phase I focused on the location, acquisition, and interpretation of existing data, studies, and related documentation for remedial technologies. Data were obtained through a comprehensive literature survey and telephone contracts / interviews with agencies, industries, vendors, research groups, and others involved in the development and marketing of technologies. Emphasis was placed on technologies that have been developed and / or applied in Europe, Japan and Canada, because of the promise that these areas have more advanced hazardous waste programs in place. An important part of the Phase I activity was the assembly and review of information that EPA scientific personnel have obtained in their foreign travel assignments or through contact with foreign consultants or academics. A list of EPA personnel that were contact for input to the Phase I technology identification activity is provided in Section 4, along with non-EPA contacts . . . .

Accelerating Cleanup at Toxic Waste Sites: Fast-tracking Environmental Actions and Decision Making presents truly innovative advances in investigative and cleanup technologies, offering valuable solutions that streamline the data collection process, speed up the time it takes to characterize a site, and expedite decision making. Using easy to understand graphic displays, tables, text summaries, and real world case studies, and by synthesizing technical and regulatory reference information crucial to the development of effective cleanup strategies, this book provides the framework for environmental professionals to develop project and program approaches that meet today's needs. An advanced text for those with at least basic understanding of environmental investigation, cleanup, regulations, decision making, and policy development, Accelerating Cleanup at Toxic Waste Sites addresses the "human" side of the environmental industry and why it is perhaps one of the most important considerations for successful accelerated cleanup. This book takes the next step by providing managers, project teams, and other professionals with approaches that bring techniques, regulations, strategies, and people together into one comprehensive package that works.

This third edition updates and expands the material presented in the best-selling first and second editions of Basic Hazardous Waste Management. It covers health and safety issues affecting hazardous waste workers, management and regulation of radioactive and biomedical/infectious wastes, as well as current trends in technologies. While the topics have been completely revised, the author employs the same practical approach that made the previous editions so popular. Chapters are structured to first outline the issue, subject, or technology, then to describe generic practice, and then to conclude with a summary of the statutory or regulatory approach. Blackman introduces fundamental issues such as human health hazards; the environmental impacts of toxic, reactive, and ignitable materials; the mobility, pathways and fates of released hazardous materials; and the roles of science, technology, and risk assessment in the standards-setting process. He explores hazardous waste site remediation technology, and the application of federal statutes, regulations, programs, and policies to the cleanup of contaminated sites. This text provides an introductory framework-which can serve as the foundation for a program of study in traditional as well as modern hazardous waste management-or a component of a related program. Its overview format provides numerous references to more detailed materials to assist the student or instructor in expansion on specific topics.
